Issue185:
185"Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

Position: disagree
Syllabus:
1. Disclosing scandals is no doubt helpful to prevent people from abusing his power.
2. To some degree, scandal is at least better making a great mistake.
3. However, more emphasis should be placed on how to prevent the scandals from occurring.

Are scandals useful in calling our attention to important problems, as the statements suggests? I agree that, to some extent, scandals can serve to reveal problems in many cases that a community or society should address. On the other hand, scandals can distract us from more important societal issues.

On the one hand, disclosing scandals in no doubt helpful to prevent people from abusing his power and his repute, which sometimes will save both the government and the public. Perhaps the paradigmatic modern example is the Watergate case. Early disclosing of the Watergate scandal saves people from heavier suffering of the government cheating. What’s more, it alleviated the more abusing of power which will harm the pubic. In retrospect the scandal forever increased the level of scrutiny and accountability to which our public officials are held, thereby working a significant and lasting benefit to our society.

Moreover, the revealing of scandals do benefit a lot involve in academic and sports competition. Recently, more and more plagiarisms on science research were exposed to public. The incidence of Jan Hendrik Schön’s, a German physicist who won great prominence after a series of apparent breakthroughs, is paradigmatic example of the plagiarism in science. The famous Bell Lab declared to fire out Doc Jan for his cheating in at least eight academic papers, although facing the smirch of the lab with no cheat in its 76 years researching history, it benefited the public circumstance of physics in the end because of its disclosing.

To some degree, scandal is at least better than making a great mistake. Appropriate disclosure of scandals is helpful for self-examination, it’s a timely warning for newcomers which prevent from the great mistake. When the scandal showed out to the public, advises and critics from every aspects will be prompted to the solving of the problem.

However, more emphasis should be placed on how to prevent the scandal form occurring, in spite of the helpful aspects above. Scandals whatever in politics or economy or academy will prevent the regular development of relevant areas. The more scandals are disclosed, the more severe the situation will be. How to consummate laws to inspect and supervise the sandal behavior should be the point, systematic laws will play a more important role in this area.

We should recognize the positive effect of scandals such as establishment of ethics standard and fair competitive environment. Nevertheless, the more emphasis should be on how to prevent it.

argument163提纲

163The following is taken from the editorial section of the local newspaper in Rockingham.

"In order to save a considerable amount of money, Rockingham's century-old town hall should be torn down and replaced by the larger and more energy-efficient building that some citizens have proposed. The old town hall is too small to comfortably accommodate the number of people who are employed by the town. In addition, it is very costly to heat the old hall in winter and cool it in summer. The new, larger building would be more energy efficient, costing less per square foot to heat and cool than the old hall. Furthermore, it would be possible to rent out some of the space in the new building, thereby generating income for the town of Rockingham."

Syllabus:
1 The old town is too small to comfortably accommodate the number of people who are employed by the town
2 It is costly to heat he old hall in winter and cool it in summer.
3 The new larger building would be more energy efficient, costing less per square foot to heat and cool than the old fall
4 it would be possible to rent out some of the space in the new building, thereby generating income for the town of Rockingham.

In order to save a considerable amount of money, Rockingham's century-old town hall should be torn down and replaced by the larger and more energy-efficient building that some citizens have proposed

逻辑分析:
1. The old town hall is too small to comfortably accommodate the number of people who are employed by the town+ the old town is replaced by the new one=It can accommodate the number of people who are employed by the town.
2. It is costly to heat he old hall in winter and cool it in summer+ the new larger building would be more energy efficient, costing less per square foot to heat and cool than the old fall=it will save considerable amount of money.
3. It would be possible to rent out some of the space in the new building=it thereby generates income for the town
破题方法: (syllabus)
1. firstly, though the new hall which the citizen proposed is larger, that is not to say the new one is larger enough to comfortably accommodate. We haven’t been told the exact number of the people who are employed by the town, if the original number is also out of the new hall’s capacity, the building of the new hall will be null.
2. moreover, it’s tenable to conclude that the new hall will save money for the new larger building would be more energy efficient, costing less per square foot to heat and cool than the old fall. The total expenses will be influenced by other factors such as: the maintaining fee will be higher, the larger expense on workers’ salary etc.
3. even if the building of new hall will save amount of money and provide more comfortable place, it’s not essential to tear down the old one. The expense of the old one will be solved by other means like: change new facilities. The century-old town hall will serve as a wonderful place of great interest to gain income which can be used to improve the old hall.

写得蛮好的呀,逻辑也很清楚,不过我觉得你是赞成作者的论点的啊~~~~
感觉分领域来写scandal的有利方面很清楚,不过如果在段首就表明这种思路会更清晰。
