issue4 Ares战队victor的第二次作业——修改(by George)
issue4 Ares第二次作业(by victor)
4. "No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study."
在任何一个研究领域当中,除非有该领域之外的人引进他们的知识和经验,否则该领域就很难获得巨大的发展。
1) The knowledge and experience brought in by outsiders can provide fresh ideas and inspirations to promote the development of one field.
2) At the name (same^_^) time, insiders can enrich their own field by importing some results from other areas, without just negatively receive (receiving) assistance of outsiders.
3) In the process of such communication mentioned above, a new discipline, which combines two or several relatively independent ones, is likely to emerge and give another alternative for people to understand the nature.
I fundamentally agree with the speaker's statement that outsiders can promote the development of one field by introducing their knowledge and experience. Yet I also believe that insiders can propel the advancement of the study by importing those research results produced in another field. And sometimes, when two independent disciplines meet together, a new discipline is likely to be born (bear).
To begin with, the knowledge and experience brought in by outsiders can provide fresh ideas and inspirations to promote the development of one field. Generally speaking, all disciplines' ultimate goal is to study the nature. We have divided our study by discipline only because of the limitation of our cognitive ability, not of the nature of the world’s configuration. Thus there must be some connection between them. It is natural that some knowledge in one field may also work well in another field. The role of outsiders is to assume the task of practicing such communication. Take Vegener Afred for example. He used to be a meteorologist, a typical outsider of geophysicist. But with his abound knowledge and experience in his own field, he invented the theory of continental drift and rejuvenated the idea that all the continents were once joined together as one landmass. His discovery and invention are supposed to belong to geophysics. As an outsider, he definitely has(用has definitely比较好) enhanced the study of geophysics. This example has perfectly demonstrated how fruitful when (用when干什么——去掉when) an outsider can dedicate to another field with his solid background in his original study.
Secondly, at the same time, insiders can enrich their own field by importing some results from other areas, without just negatively receiving assistance of outsiders. As insiders, they have a better understanding of what is going on in the field and what is the main obstacle in the way. Thus they can seek to introduce the methods which are most suitable in solving the problems. For example, sociologists have borrowed statistics from mathematics. Sociology, which can (could) go back to nineteenth century, has (had) used quantitative methods and data (all the time) at the beginning. But since the end of the World War II, the data available has grow (grown) considerably and (has) become more complex. To solve the problem of how to deal with the data, the sociologists then introduced statistics to the sociology. Statistics is a useful tool for handling the data with its rigorous mathematic models and formulations. Therefore, whenever confronted with a problem, a researcher should keep in mind that some method or theory from other fields may help to overcome the difficulty.
Finally, in the process of such communication mentioned above, a new discipline, which combines two or several relatively independent ones, is likely to emerge and give another alternative for people to understand the nature. We have separated disciplines which should be treated as a whole. Because of the gap between the different disciplines, it is possible (that) some significant parts are neglected. As a result, we have to establish the connection for bridging the gap. Take biochemistry for example, it studies substance in living body and the chemical reactions underlying life process. Obviously this science has come from biology and chemistry just as its name indicates. And it not only provides a new perspective for us to study but also can influence our life profoundly. With the development of biochemistry, new medicine is produced to cure some diseases that used to afflict us.
To sum up, discipline is only a method for us to look at the nature from different angles. One discipline may seem to be (be seen as) a complete system---except that it is not. Consequently, we need to establish communication between them, either with the introduction of the outsider's knowledge or the importation carried out by insiders. And sometimes, if necessary, a new discipline may be created just to better our study of the world.
