ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
People have various goals through every phases of their life time, and they have many means to choose to attain their goals. It's not so easy to deal with the relationship between the goals and means. There has been a controversy about this problem for a long time. I believe that even when our goals are worthy, not any means taken to attain it is justifiable.
First, it's difficult and complex to define a worthy goal. The reason is that people's backgrounds such as education, ideas of values, experience and public relationship and so on are different, so they have different opinions about a worthy goal. The old saying: "A man's candy is the other's poison" just illuminates this point. In addition, some goals which regarded as worthy by certain individuals may be harmful even damageable to our society. For instance, Hitler thought that the Jews is inferior race and he had an insane goal to slaughter them. He regards the goal as a worthy goal. The goal was extremely inhuman and evil to the whole human being let alone being worthy. Therefore, when we have a goal, we should consider the goal itself is truly worthy first, make sure that it is not detrimental to society and others.
Second, even when our goals are worthy, not any means taken to attain them are justifiable. Different means maybe lead to the same goal finally, but the time and energy they spent is not the same, in the other word, the efficiency and effect the means bring is different. The most important thing is that we should attain our goals under the laws and moralities. We should not violate our conscience to take illegal or immoral means to attain our individual's intention. History provides plenty of examples about taking base means to attain worthy goals. In the Watergate scandal, Nixon took the illegal and immoral means--- to eavesdrop his opponent, in order to get some important information to attaint his goal to success in the running for president. The goal is worthy, however, such means to attain it is indubitably justifiable.
Moreover, we should not only consider the morality respect but also the costs when we choose from various means. If we neglect the cost before we take action to attain our goal, we may finally find that what we gain cannot offset the loss though the course to the goal. This result is lamentable because all the efforts we have taken go to waste. Nowadays, many countries pursue economic profit in the cost of environment. In order to develop industry--- which is a worthy goal, we take the means such as deforestation, air and water pollution, decimation of animals and so on. Admittedly, after the continuous "effort", our economy and industry has been developed and our worthy goal seems to have been attaint, but more serious problems have appeared. Ozone hole, global warming, desertification and so on. The costs are so enormous that we have to use the money we gain from developing the economy. The result is apparently ludicrous.
In sum, we should first make a clear principle of a worthy goal to make sure the goal we plan to attain will not harm others' interest. Even if a goal is worthy, only the means which are under the laws and modalities are justifiable. In addition, optimizing our methods and paths to gain at lese cost is also very important.
