185."Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
185. 丑闻,不管是政治、学术还是其他领域,可能是有用的。它们能吸引人们的注意力,而这点,是任何发言人和改革家都办不到的
提纲
1. On the one hand, scandals can sometimes serve to call our attention to pervasive social or political problems that we would otherwise neglect. The paradigmatic modem example is the Dr. Hwang Woo Suk published a paper in the journal Science that claimed his team had successfully obtained stem cells from cloned human embryos. But allegations from co-workers that he had falsified data followed and he later resigned from Seoul National University. A university panel investigated Dr. Hwang's results and announced that he had fabricated data. 韩国“克隆之父”黄禹锡论文造假丑闻
2. No public speaker or reformer could have called the nation's attention to the problem of business ethics unless the scandal had surfaced.
3. In summary, there are potentially many very charismatic and influential people that can be truly motivational leaders and focus a society’s attention on a particular problem. But quite often it takes a scandal and the accompanying publicity to make the public truly take notice and actually contemplate a specific issue.

Charismatic leaders and ultra-popular figures in society undoubtedly have the ability to redirect our attention towards some specific problems. But there is no doubt that a scandal in any aspect of a society may be a useful and powerful attention-getter that can motivate people to sit up and take notice of a previously unknown or little—discussed problem.

To begin with, a scandal cannot actually exist if no one knows about it. Normally when one hears of a scandal, it is caused by someone’s truly outrageous behavior. It is quite often someone of a least celebrity status that is the offender; thereby making the scandal an even bigger news worldwide, one can see that, many times, the news covers a particular political or societal scandal. They very fact that a scandal mesmerizes and titillates a society makes it an ideal motivator for focusing public attention on a particular problem within that society.

As one example, the recent scandal involving academia, a scandal over world famous biological scientist Dr. Hwang Woo Suk focused on the academic world’s attention on the previously little-discussed problem of fraud. Dr. Although allegation of fraud had arisen in the past, there had been no scandal created because those accused were not well known and had mostly written little paper of any consequence. On the contrary, Dr. Huang had been cited as a worldwide famous expert on stem cell research and cloning field. The ensuing scandal that erupted over his admitted fraud probably focused attention on the problem of swindling on the paper in a way that no individual could have done.

No public speaker or reformer could have called the nation's attention to the problem of business ethics unless the scandal had surfaced. In an example from business, the recent scandal involving business ethics by Enron Corporation and Arthur Andersen focused the world’s attention on the problem of accounting fraud. The Enron scandal played a major role in shaking investor confidence in American business because the firm was able to hide its losses for nearly five years. Outside agencies, such as accounting firms, credit-rating businesses, and stock market analysts failed to warn the public about Enron’s business losses until they were obvious to all. Arthur Andersen Enron scandal resulted in new legislation that reformed accounting practices and strengthened the ability of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to investigate accounting fraud. Although there had been such allegations and even lawsuit settlements in the past, it took a large-scale scandal to really focus the public’s attention on the problem. When only a few people had previously spoken out, very little attention was directed towards the potential problems. Then a massive scandal broke out involving several 500 Forbes Corporations been accused of financial fraud. Arthur Andersen as one of the leading auditing and consulting firms in the world was also facing the destiny of disorganization. The public was outraged, causing the problems to be addressed at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

A further example of the impact of scandal on society can be found in the entertainment field that Michael Jackson was involving sexual abuse. In the early 1990’s, the general population was not concerned about the problem of pedophiles in high-famous positions of stars. But when famous popular music star Michael Jackson was accused, followed by the resulting scandal over his mystery little sex life, the public’s attention became more focused on the problem of pedophiles in high-ranking society of famous people.

In summary, there are potentially many very charismatic and influential people that can be truly motivational leaders and focus a society’s attention on a particular problem. But quite often it takes a scandal and the accompanying publicity to make the public truly take notice and actually contemplate a specific issue.
