2，批评家发现作品的价值，帮助人们选择作品，节省时间和精力，而且评论可以帮助人们从比较专业的角度欣赏作品，领略其真正美妙之处。比如小说前部分对于其内容的评价，比如对于一些绘画的评论文字，比如电影的影评等等。
    而且批评家帮助艺术走向进一步的成熟，他们把意见反馈给艺术家以供借鉴。
3，但是有时候批评家起到了不好的作用。艺术是需要创新的，但是由于探索新需要打破常规，所以有时候批评家并不能站在很高的角度给与客观的评价，所以有时候阻碍了艺术的发展。比如Voltaire 反对Shakespeare的作品因为他不conform neo-classical principles。而且有时候批评家受到当权者的左右，比如Mark Twain小说中抨击了政治的腐败，当权者利用批评家对他的作品进行反驳。

Whether the enduring value of art is endowed by the presentation of artists or by the criticism of critics is a somewhat complex issue. However, after discreet weighing about their contributions, the artists who originative embody the world with artistic skills turn out to excel the critics who feed back to their works.

The artists, with the very artistic way of thinking, view the world in a variety of artistic expressions. They envision a torrent while see a comparatively meek river; they imagine the miserable past when encounter a bagger in the street. Their emotions and feelings are so sensitive and easily provoked that they become the embodiment of the guides, predictors and reflectors of the even intangible social trends. They witness the deeply hidden beauty in nature which no one has ever catched, and presented them in particular ways in his own way. The eternal and mysterious smile of  Mona Lisa, created by da Vinci, Leonardo, in the process of either appearing or disappearing, would surely impart pleasing enjoyment for the audiences; the poems and dramas of Shakespeare, with the gracefully flowing words, distract us from the otherwise modest even boring and exhaustive everyday life, and lead us explore the beautiful and sousing adventure.

there were some of the most intelligent ones, though, who are not recognized even dismissed by their contemporary, for their accomplishment is so great and original that it is somewhat hard for their peers to fully comprehended what they are presenting. Van gogh
is a appropriate case in point. During his long tragic life, he struggled with economic and physic troubles, and the modern highly apprised artist had never been able to foresee his significance today. The unbearable depression ended his life with a gun. However, their neglecting by their contemporaries have not bury their outstanding performances. Their enduring legacy would perpetrate generations.

The function of critics, as it seems, is relatively assistant to the presentation of artist. On one hand, they classify and estimate works; they criticize and appreciate. They help people to chose the ones which are most suitable to them; they illustrate the hidden meaning of the portray in artist's expression. They are the communicative path between artists and common people, and they push the art go forward by suggesting and reflection. Normally , when one chose a newly published book, the criticizing on the front-page plays crucial part for constructing and summarizing; the connotation of certain paintings by famous artists always indispensable; the latest blockbuster frequently should be accompanied by the professional critiques.

Nonetheless, critics sometimes are not contributing but exerting adverse functions. The art is innovative and developmental, while it is understandable for certain critics to hold the traditional viewpoint which is essentially objective to such originative product. This kind of encumbrance, apparently, strives to make the artistic trend reversed conflicting with the professional process. Shakespeare’s work has been dismissed by Voltaire, who labeled his work as nonconforming neo-classical principles, yet his achievement is obviously remarkable; Mark Twain's novels are realistic and reflected the corruption of government, which provoked the political denunciation by critics operated by the government.

In sum, the lasting value of society is, as the author indicated, given by artists who creatively and skillfully representing the real world in artistic expression, while the critics only serve as assistant for the communication between the mass and artists, sometimes even counteractive for they are not innovative enough or operated by the government in some instance
