The speaker claims that certain nonmainstream areas of inquiry play a vital role in society because they could satisfy human needs cannot be met by mainstream science. I concede nonmainstream inquiry, to some degree, offers people, especially ancient people a way to predict the future. Nevertheless, with the enhancement of human knowledge, this sort of inquiry is more treated by a entertainmental or playful attitude, rather than playing a vital role.
To begin with, the chief reason why people resort to nonmainstream areas due to their strong desire to predict the future. This desire stems from human nature; especially in the ancient time, most people had a disturbing sense of uncertainty and unsafety partly due to their living condition was unstable and always faced with danger. They consulted the sky to provide them with an answer, like people in China, India or Europe where later astrology formed and applied prevalently. Human are always trying to find an answer to convince themselves or to render them get prepared in advance. In this sense, nonmainstream areas of inquiry including astrolofy and fortune telling have their own markets among people.
However, with the rapid development of mainstream science, especially social science and history, people have gained paths to know the future on the basis of more dependable data and scientific prediction. That people believe in nonmainstream science is mainly due to their ignorance and blindness. For instance, an ignorant people having acquired little or no education, or even ill education might resort to paranormal way to cure disease rather than go to the hospital; this kind of events occurred quite often in needy and poor-education countries in certain places of Asia and Africa. Is medical field never addressed by mainstream science? Definitely not, it is owe to people's limited knowledge and immature and even detrimental concepts. These concepts may even impede these persons to settle problems in a proper way and delay what should be addressed imediately.
Moreover, nonmainstream begin to be more treated as something entertaining and playful, rather than playing a vital role in human's life. For instance, a certain number of people choose to wear clothes in certain "lucky" color based on the recommendation of astrological websites everyday. Is it really this kind of theory of color satisfy these people's psychological needs and plays a truly important role in their lives? This answer seems to be doubtable. A authoritative survey conducted recently by a scientific magazine reveals that only 1.43 percent people in a pool involving 20,000 people admitted that they think put the activities concerning about nonmainstream areas of inquiry as somewhat top priority of life, such as obeying the comments and advice on the astrological website everyday. While, most other people, if they have ever make contact with it, regard it as something fresh, interesting, and playful, rather than something serious. More than 89.64 percent of people demonstrate that they have never treat it seriously although it satisfies their curiosity.
To sum up, although nonmainstream inquiry could satisfy certain human needs in predicting the future, however, it could never replace mainstream science. After all, it is mainstream science that could either predict things or solve problems standing on a strong and safe ground.
