TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
WORDS: 506 TIME: 0:52:00 DATE: 2006-7-15
The author claims that scandal has its value in any field since it could focus our attention on issue which seems more likely to be overlooked. Based on personal life experience, I fundamentally agree with the author's claim, in my view, scandal does deserve our attention on some extent to discover the darker note in order to warn people and prevent them from it in any areas.
To begin with, let's take a look at politic area, in where scandal plays a key role in preserving a fair and integrity political atmosphere. Common sense tells me that politic area is the place where has the most scandals and most of them are undiscovered. Thus, to examine out the scandals hidden in politics and politicians are crucial to maintain a democratic society. A great number of politicians who seem integrity ultimately make his/her career failed since the breakout of their scandals. History is replete with examples of this: Consider about the President Nixon, who once was considered as a effective and integrity leader but actually take his own interests far more seriously than the interests of democratic society, fails at the uncover of the well-known Watergate scandal.
When it comes to academic area, it is the same. Under today's high-speed system of communication, it is easier than past to steal or copy other's scientific achievements. Scandals are most likely to prevent people who want to achieve fame and wealth not through diligent research but by cheating. Like most recently academic scandal in China, for instance, that a researcher claims that he has invented a CPU by totally himself without the technical supports from foreign companies and researchers and named the CPU with a so-Chinese name: Dragon-CPU. Then he aquest a large mount of money for his research from government and use that money to his personal enjoyment. Such issues and people have humiliated the holy scientific field, apparently it is scandal to uncover them and send them to face the punishments.
Finally, it is true that scandals have merits since they can help us maintain a fair system in many area, however, it does not mean that we can over-emphasize on scandals as well as overlooking some more important issues both to society and ourselves. Still take Watergate as an example, it is the scandal moved public's and also the government's attention from some more emergence affairs at that time such as the education of children. As a result, the crimes rate of juvenists in America was dramatically increasing in the following years. Moreover, the fact that people put so much emphasis on scandals does little contribution to everyday work, in the contrary; it could impede the works’ efficient since scandals take workers' attention away.
To sum up, scandals, although sometimes are overestimated and steal our attention from more crucial problems, do have their merits to maintain an integrity and fair system of politic, academic, and other areas. Without the help of scandal, it is obviously that both politics’ fairness and academic's authority are in danger. |
