Argument145 a new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person—often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed—and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.
正文:
The author indicates that anyone who snores should try to eat less and exercise more comparing to average person. In order to support his conclusion, the arguer cites a result of a study and some other related information, most of which are unfounded. Next I will point out the fallacies of the argument one by one.
To begin with, the result of the study is unconvincing. The study only says that people who snore are more likely to put on weight than those who do not snore. It is equally possible that people who are gaining weight are more likely to snore than common ones. That is to say, it is the fatness which leads to snore behavior, instead of the opposite causal relationship. Therefore, if the truth is fatness causes snore, then all the arguer's deduction is wrong. Without ruling out these possibilities, the arguer can not make his argument believable, let alone some other suggestions to those snore people.
In the second place, even if the truth is that snore result in gaining weight, the arguer still can not make his argument convincing. Besides the above, the arguer's conclusion is also based on another important precondition, which is that all the snoring persons having the condition of sleep apnea. But the author only says many snoring people, which is not all the snoring people, will have the sleep apnea phenomenon. There are some persons who snore, without the condition of sleep apnea. So, the conclusion that anyone who snores should eat less and exercise more, is unwarranted because of lacking enough evidence.
In the third place, even though both of the two preconditions are correct, the conclusion of the argument is still doubtful. In the arguer's opinion, it is the snore behavior leading to gaining weight, and hence, those people who snore, should exercise more in order to lose weight or keep a proper weight. But in our daily lives, we know that there are many other sorts of reasons of the fatness, such as the diet habit, personal character, genetic factor and so on, besides the snore behavior as the arguer said. Therefore, fatness does not mean that the fat man snores, as a result, it is not reasonable to ask the snore person to exercise more.
Last but not the least, the arguer fails to build a reasonable causal relationship between sleep apnea and tiredness of the daytime. Whether it is really the sleep apnea which causes the fatigue of daytime is still unknown to us. The arguer only says that sleep apnea is very short and unnoticeable, yet there is no information concerning the reason why the sleep apnea results in tiredness of daytime. Without this information, the arguer can not convince us that his judgment is absolutely correct. The fault has made his conclusion doubtful already.
To sum up, there are several fatal fallacies existed in this argument, which have made the argument unconvincing. In order to prove his conclusion more sufficiently, the arguer has to bring out some other pieces of information, which are all of importance, such as the credibility of the study, the reason of sleep apnea leading to tiredness and so on. Only by this, can the argument be illustrated fully. |
