When the word "greatness" first comes into our mind, the gigantic figures in the history will flow out, such as the Caesar, Mozart, Michelangelo, etc,. However, after pondering on this question for a few minutes, we may possibly realize that, even in nowadays, there are great people, to some extent, such as Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking, or even Cristiano Ronaldo, which varies according to different people. Therefore, the greatness of individuals can be decided not only by those who live after them but also by their contemporaries, which entirely depends on the degree of the greatness.

Although the great individuals can be decided by their contemporaries, the most influential ones, admitted by the common peoples of the world, can only be recognized through long periods by the men live after them. Actually, the great ones always bearing in our mind are those historical people. This is due to the lack of media to know them or the diversity opinion upon them at that time. Also, the scope limitation of the multitude is a reason since the great people usually go ahead before their times. However, after a long time, we can know the people from all aspects and lead to a consistent opinion upon them; whether they are indeed excellent or not can be determined by an objective examination.

In so far as the contemporaries, some great people who are at the same times may also be existed in their mind. However, the great ones vary for different individuals. Take the modern society for example, the internet has made the world a small village. As a result, all the people in the world can be now known to and examined by us. According to our interest, we may consider someone to be great. A football fan will consider Ronaldo, the most fantastic football player, to be great, while a physics student may choose Stephen Hawking whose theory deals with the origins of the universe elegantly, and when it comes to a politician, he may respect Bill Clinton, who impulses the America's economy for nearly ten years. Therefore, if we define the greatness a little bit weak, the greatness can also be decided by the contemporaries, and there are diverse choices.

In conclusion, depending on the degree of greatness, it can be determined by either those who live after them or the contemporaries.
