I agree with the speaker partially that it is the artist , not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value for a main reason that the artist is who creates the artwork by himself or herself. Therefore they are the people who have the indubitable qualification. However, because of the many limitations of the artist and their artwork, it is inadequate for giving the society something of lasting value only by artist, the critic is indispensably, no matter the criticism is positive or negative.

Artwork, is the valuable things that artist not only  ever made but also put a soul into. It is the artist who makes the value of the artwork become available by their own soul. If there is no artist’s creature at first, how could the critic give something of value, let alone the lasting value for our society. However, according to the art history, so many outstanding artistic trends are ignored or not accepted by people in society at the early stage in the development for the reason that they break the old rules of creating art. And any artwork unaccepted by society impossibly brings society something of valuable. So the critic is who help the new artistic trends be recognized by society and then take the value of them to society. The new art trend is like the rough diamond, they will not dazzle with brilliancy unless they are dressed. And the critic is the person who dresses the diamond.

Though the critic is not who create value of art directly, he or her must be a right person who unearth the value of art. The function of critic is criticism, not matter the criticism is positive or negative, it will help people to appreciate the value of art. When it is comes to the positive criticism, there is not doubt that it appeared the most valuable aspects of the artwork to our society. A notable example is the criticism of  novel. A outstanding novel is identified as a masterwork by deposition of numerous meaningful literary criticism. Every masterwork of literary have something of lasting value for our society. The Old Man And The Sea written by Ernest Hemingway who  was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954; Gone With The Wind by Margarete Mithcell who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937, and also many other literary classics influence generation and generation, and g society invaluable  spiritual prossess.

When it is comes the negative criticism, in a short time, it seems that the artwork become a subject which is attacked by the whole world, and the critic usually describes a new artwork as a thing that not worth a straw. However, it is actually a sinfonia before it becoming the outstanding art genre. What defects the critic point out are in fact the value of the artwork. We can take the progress of development of impressionism painting as a good example. Impressionism painting got plenty of rebuke from many authorities. The critics declared that impressionism was at most a sketch and could be termed a finished work. And now , impressionism paintings are famous for this kind of characteristic. Therefore, the negative criticism is just a particular signal of the intergraded for a new art trend from unfamiliar with people to familiar, with the suggestion of those negative criticism,  their value will turn our completely one of these day. And the art history provided this phenomenon.

In summary, the question that who will be the person gives society something of lasting value will have a special answer. In my opinion, both artist and critic have important contribution. They are like tow cooperators, only if they do the job together, will it gives society of a lasting value.

全篇的层次非常清晰。个人觉得如果能把第二段的重点放在artist的功劳上，把后半部分的人们在critic帮助下认识艺术价值那一部分作为单独一段，或与后面在进行结构的调整，感觉会更好~
