ISSUE147-"Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."

传统和现代化是水火不容的。人们必须二者选一。

何谓现代，何谓传统，有没有一个标准？谁能给我一个区分？很难。在现实社会中，传统与现代相互交融。但是不可否认，传统与现代看起来往往是排斥的，同时，传统往往力图禁锢现代，现代意图颠覆传统。但是，正是因此，他们谁也颠覆不了谁，谁也不能独立发展，注定了的相辅相成

提纲
      1.传统与现代在现在复杂的社会中本身就是共同存在的。
         a.现代社会的许多观点，创意总是在借鉴传统。eg .1.时装的流行元素借鉴传统的民族风
            或是曾经流行的元素。eg. 2.现代标志文明的环保观念实际上古代中国就有提到过
         b.现代的科技用新的方式发展了传统。eg.圣诞节的卡片是一种礼仪，但是现在e-mail
           使 之更加环保。
      2．承认传统与现代有冲突的地方，诸如说是一些宗教传统以及无知的习俗。
      3．传统与现代的对立与和谐，注定了他们是相融合，不可分割。


What is tradition? What is modernization？Is there a criterion? Who can tell them apart? It is really hard to answer. Because they are mixed together, in this society. But still it is undeniable that tradition often attempts to limit modernization while modernization always tries to overthrow tradition. However, just because of this, neither of them could destroy the other. Neither of them could exist alone. They are destined to be concordant.

In this ear of such a complex society, tradition and modernization always coexist with each other and promote each other. Tradition is the basis of modernization even inspires modern thoughts. Some modern ideas generated from tradition, and more new elements were mixed with traditional ideas. Although it is totally a new thing but it absolutely not conflicts to the old one. For instance, in some fashion shows we see in these days, many traditional ideas was added to concepts of design, for example, laces ,these complex adornments, which were popular in 18th and 19th century. That is because designers always draw their inspiration from traditional concepts to create new popularity, not only in fashion design but also architecture, painting and music. Another good example can be given in the case of environmental protecting. The concept of environmental protecting is proposed in recent decades, and the idea has already got into our life and is the mark of civilization. However, the concept of harmony between human beings and environment were recorded thousands years ago, in ancient Chinese books. Confucius, who is regarded as great thinker and educator of ancient China 2000 years ago, accentuated that people should love nature. At the same time, tradition is developed through modernization such as science, culture and social values, and outdated concepts have been discarded while the valuable ones are preserved. The polite act that people send cards on Christmas day for blessing is preserved till now, but today we choose a much more convenient and environmental protecting way---sending e-mail and short message. By this means, old customs have kept original contents while been changed in a modern look.

However, there are still conflicts. It is hard to deny that tradition, to some degree, prevent the progress of modernization. Some religious rules and old concepts rooted in ignorant minds set fetters to block the development of human civilization. For example, girls were not allowed to school, in ancient times, but in some countries which still keep this taboo as custom till now. That is absolutely incompatible with modern civilization.

Because of complexity of our society, it is hard to distinguish between tradition and modernization. They always coexist, promote each other and adjust to each other. There are harmonious and conflicts between tradition and modernization. In Chinese philosophy system, things that seem to conflict are always concordant. The reason why they could get along is that they conflict then concede.
