TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

Can we know a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people? Since the way people look, dress and act reveals their attitude and interests, I agree that speaker is on the right philosophical side of this issue and there is sufficient compelling support from three aspects.

First of all, the fact that people dress differently in different countries indicates that what people appear indicate their different cultural background, and thus the society's ideology. As we all know, French like to wear romantically, which shows that romance is an important characteristic of the French society. Moreover, Americans choose to wear colorful clothes, which reveals a muti-cultural society of America. In that society, people are from every where and live together. So clothes in different color mean a mixed society. Besides, Arabs like to cover all the body, especially women. Not considering the weather condition, the convention tells much about the Arabic society's ideas and values, such as women should not often show up in public places and so on.

Secondly, the fact that people dress differently in different time indicates that changes in people's dressing styles coincide with value change of a society. For example, in the ancient western world, people always dressed beautiful and complex clothes to show their status and identity while in contemporary world, people like to dress nicely, however simply. That fact notes that people nowadays tend to be equal and concise, but not mention class and luxury as in ancient time.

Thirdly, people’s behavior is dominated by their minds, and since people live in the society, its ideology surely will have great impact upon the individuals. Therefore, we can tell much about a society’s characteristics from the behavior of its people. Take the distance between people when they are chatting for instance, in most eastern countries, people would like to stay closely to show the friendship between each other, which reveals that in eastern society relationships are been emphasized, while in most western countries, people keep a proper distance between each other to show respect to others, which points out that in western society the individual’s rights are been respected and the concept of privacy is paid more attention to
.
However, in this era of rapid progress of social development, along with globalization, more and more people tend to dress and behave similar to each other in order to communicate with others more readily. For example, in international corporations, employees dress the same style of working clothes, and follow the same regulation. Otherwise, if people do not follow the same way to accomplish their work, it will be deficient and hard to manage a huge company. On that matter, other ways beside the appearance should be examined in order to fig out the idea and value of a specific society.

To sum up, it is reasonable to judge a certain society’s characteristic by carefully observing its individuals appearance and behavior, since the characteristics of a individual within a society will surely reflect the characteristic of the society to some extent. Yet, in today’s world, when international trend has become more and more accepted, it should be carefully decided how to learn the property of a society’s idea and value from other aspects beside what its people look like.
