Based on the reasons that the consumers are willing to pay high price for the safe oysters and a progress for killing the bacteria have been devised, the author specifically recommend that if the consumers are made aware of the increased safety of Gulf Coast oysters, they are likely to be willing to pay as much for Gulf Coast as for northeastern Atlantic Coast oysters, and the profits for Gulf Coast oyster producers will follow. The reasoning in this argument is problematic in some facts and is unconvincing.
First, the author fails to establish a causal relationship between the increasing price of Atlantic Coast oysters and that harmful bacteria was found in Gulf Coast oysters. It is supposed to be a cause-and-effect relationship by author but no evidence is provided to substantiate it. And the author simply ignore the other possible factors that will lead to the accretion of price of Atlantic Coast oysters, such as the better taste of the Atlantic Coast oysters than of Gulf Coast. Besides, the author says little about the price of Gulf Coast oysters. If it keeps unchanged or even is higher than before , then it will be a reasonable proof that the safety of the oysters may not effect to price. Thus, if no further information is provided, hardly could we attribute the trend to the harmful bacteria found.
Moreover, little information about the progressing of killing bacteria has been cited, or bolsters that it will win the consumers back.. Even the assumption that the harmful bacteria in Gulf Coast oyster prevent part of its original consumers from buying it, the progressing of killing bacteria does not lead to the necessary result that consumers buy the Gulf Coast oysters. Perhaps people have formed psychological obstacle, which make them unconsciously consider the oysters to be not clean, and refuse to choose them. Or perhaps the taste have been bad during the progress of killing bacteria, which render the consumers not like and fail to buy it. Without ruling out these possibilities, the author cannot prove that consumers are willing to pay as much for Gulf Coast oyster as northeastern oysters.
Further more, the producers of that oyster would not necessarily make greater profits, even if people are willing to pay the same price for the Gulf Coast oyster, for profit is related to the two factors, the incomes and cost. Only when the incomes are higher than cost, increase the profit will. While no date are available to indicated it. On one hand, the willing to pay as same price as the Atlantic Coast oysters for the Gulf Coast oysters does not necessarily contribute to the good sale, which means the income will probably not increase. On the other hand, nothing is available about the cost, perhaps the cost of killing bacteria is so high that cause the little profit following and even profit decreases. As a result, it is unfairly to draw the conclusion that the great profit will follow to the producers.
In a word, the argument is unpersuadable because it failed to provided convincing information to support that the harmful bacteria is the reason for enhancing of price of the oysters and the factor influence consumers to buy oysters, and great profit will follow for the producer of Gulf Coast oysters. To strethen the argument , the author should cite justifying data in it. |
