What attitude should we take towards the intellect, such as reasoning and other cognitive skills? The speaker asserts that not enough emphasis have been placed on it. As far as I am concerned, it is surely necessary for us to pay more attention to the intellect, but it should not be the only measure to be taken, other aspect should also be taken into account.

In our contemporary society, it is true that the importance of intellect sometimes could not be fully emphasized. The reason can to some extent relate to the development in science and technology. You may be confused at my claim, but let's put our eyes on the situation in the modern companies. The assembly lines based on highly developed technology has made the employee know little about the way the machines run, in fact, it is in most of time impossible for them because the technology could be too complicated. Consequently, the intellect such as reasoning and other cognitive skills can not be emphasized here. In most cases, what the workers can do is just pressing certain buttons according to the regulated procedures.

The other reasons for not enough emphasis has been placed on the intellect should be the effect of the contemporary society on the minds of people. In our daily lives today, many of us may have the feeling of too heavy press existing around us. It is the same to the leaders in almost every field. So we have to pay much attention to the productivity of our company or the marks on our test papers. Little time has been left for us to develop our intellect in the most proper way. On top of that, some phenomena in our society seem to give us the sense that without the help of highly developed intellect, we can still become successful in our lives. Thus there exists this kind of opinion that emphasizing the importance of intellect is not necessary.

So we should take some measures to solve the problems mentioned above, both the more objective ones with the reason of the advanced knowledge and technology, and the more subjective ones with the causes in our minds. To the former, we should encourage people such as our employees to use their creativity in the process of working or doing other things and to the latter, we should let people have the concept that it is intellect that made our society develop from the unenlightened past to our contemporary developed society, and their function will also be important now and in the future.

While placing more emphasis on intellect such as reasoning and other cognitive skills, we should not ignore other aspects that are also significant to the development of the individuals and the whole society-the most important one of which can be the emotion quotient. To a company, the most effective leader and employee could not be the one who only owns the skills in the area of intellect; the abilities such as to communicate and cooperate with others, to make a harmonious ambience are indispensable. And our purpose of education should not be only focusing on the intellectual skills to be learned; the weird student with lots of knowledge can not contribute much to our society and lead to a truly successful life.   

In sum, in our contemporary society, both the skills of intellect and the abilities in the area of emotion are important to a round-developed person. We should put emphasis on both of them so that we can expect a brighter future of our society.
