50"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach." 50. 为了提高大学的教学质量,所有的教职员工应该去校外参加一些和他们教的课程相关的工作


Living in such a complex era teeming with accumulation of knowledge and universally challenges, people start to feel for their children the urgent need for a high quality education and instruction in schools, especially in college and university, which more or less the last phase before the youths stepping into society. Thus faculty in the educational institutions who cast the most direct influence on the students are reasonably suggested to spend time working outside the academic world in professions in order to provide the latest and newest knowledge to the students. We should, however, still take some situations into account to see if all faculties should be required to do so.

Frequently do we meet some teachers just finishing their college life and staying in the university as faculty impart the axioms and theorems written in the book to their students without knowing how to liven those principals. And how many times I am taught premiere or other editing soft wares I am supposed to use in my future career by someone who has never worked for a TV station or edited a film by himself/herself. Already possessing the ability to learn by heart those principals or learn through basic instructions how to use the software, as students, we need more the vivid application experience than the stiff things which have been put down on the book, to give us a feeling of touching the reality and society. The world runs on wheels, and not a single academic field is so static that the knowledge inside academic world only could adequately prepare one individual to cope with challenges in the society. Faculty spending some time working outside of the academic world could immit fresh blood and air to the subject, refine the established theory according to the time and might even discover and deduce a new one, whereby creativity comes.

Simply put, without the work experience outside of academic world, our faculty would find themselves bogged down in a circle of fixed knowledge without many creativities and vivid ideas to share with their students, which barricades the improvement of instruction quality. On the other hand, before we hastily require all faculties to go out working, a detailed classification according to their fields will show that some of them should stay inside. A comparison between applied mathematics and literature would act as a good example.

Students majoring in applied mathematics are expected to master both the mathematic knowledge and applied methods to resolve problems encountered in the real life. While instructions of both can be attained inside academic world, faculty can not really teach a student how to apply this knowledge in their common life without some experience themselves. Even the same major would be taught differently emphasizing on various parts of life. For instance, in our broadcasting college, most of applied mathematics students, if not all of them, will work in a radio or television station after graduation, which makes media control system and self-control broadcasting system study and research to be their main direction. Only after a close touch with media can faculty obtain the cognition where are the work still need to be done and what are the most significant knowledge and consciousness their students should possess in the temporary world .Most of the sciences are calling for this kind of cognition their faculty should have, whereas most of the arts prefer an inward discovery.

The achievement and a good instruction in the field of literature are basically attained on the base of an accumulated appreciation and recognition of the esteem-inspiring works and an assiduous study of the contemporary productions, in which a full time devotion is needed. Among the various abilities faculty should have to acquaint and inspire the students with the best minds in the works is a profound perspective the teacher obtains through constant contemplation and fortuitous discovery. Under this situation, work outside the academic world may serve as a distraction that will sway the teaching quality.

Further more, it is impossible for schools to control the actual work of their faculty once they are obliged to spend some time working outside. Some of them simply choose family tutor as their professional work in the time given (which really happened around me), hereby people can see no increase of their teaching quality but decrease of their energy in daily work.

If all faculty stay in the academic world, we will lose the momentum of creativity and change in instruction, whereas all faculty go out working, we will face an academic field with few deep thoughts to provide to the youths. An experienced teacher teaches us how to cope with temporary world and make progress materially while an academic teacher quietly keeps us in check to explore our deepest root and help us develop spiritually.
