When asked about the main benefit of studying history, a great many people might embrace the idea that it promotes us to understand that no considerable difference exists between people of different eras. Admittedly, this point of view is rational partly; however, the study of history also provides us a great deal of other benefits, some of which are even more important and vital.
To begin with, it is undeniable that many same or similar characteristics exist among human beings of different eras. For instance, from slavery, feudal regime, to the present modern society, human beings never stop the persistent pursuit of freedom, democracy, which is the basic and shared common belief in centuries. On January 1st, 1863, one of the greatest presidents in the history of the United States, named Abraham Lincoln, declared "The Emancipation Proclamation" which stands for the abrogation of slavery thoroughly. And this case appropriately shows us human beings' constant efforts to acquire freedom. In addition, from ancient periods to current era people highly appreciate and emphasize the people with good attributes and nature, such as ready to help others in need; having a good sense of responsibility and accountability, holding team-spirit and so on. Although centuries have passed, those shared common characteristics in value exist still in human.
Meanwhile, never should we ignore that distinctive attributes and features are displayed by people in different periods, which to some extent properly distinguishes them from each other. Specifically, in ancient China, such as Qing dynasty, Ming dynasty, people held the partial opinion that women should not be educated for every reason, moreover, their born responsibility is to take care of the children, husband, and the parents-in-law, however, with the progress of the society, the old view concerning women has changed totally. Nowadays, in China women are treated equally as men, no matter at home or in the society with identical opportunities for education and employment.
Furthermore, the study of history presents us more than the above mentioned point of view, as a matter of fact, we also learn quite a lot about the law of social development and the trend of the evolvement of nature, which are critical understandings from studying history. For example, through studying history, we realize that the development and evolvement should be carried on in a sustainable approach. At the initial development of certain developed countries, they choose to develop in a way which is fraught of serious pollution to the environment, however, later people through studying the experience in history realize the severity of the problem, and begin to embark on the sustainable development, which fits the trend of social evolvement and is in accordance with the aggregate welfare of the society. In addition, we also learn numerous other precious experience and lessons during the process of the studying history.
To sum up, we can come to the conclusion that history teaches us to understand both the similar and distinctive characteristics of the human beings, which is a basic understanding of the human being ourselves. Even more importantly, we acquire considerable other knowledge and information with regard to the society on the whole, which helps us to establish a better development of the society |
