In this recommendation, the president and administrative staff of Grove College claim that the college should restore its old tradition of providing education for female specially. To justify the above suggestion, the author cites the result of a survey which presents the attitudes of interviewed students and alumni with regard to the recovery of all-female education. A crucial assumption underlying this recommendation is that the restoration will definitely enhance the morale among students and keep the continuous financial support from alumni.
To begin with, the result of the survey is insufficient to substantiate the critical assumption that the recovery(应该是保持或者保留的意思吧,recovery是恢复的意思吧,换个词) of all-female education will certainly strengthen the students' morale. As a matter of fact, although eighty percent of respondents express in favor of the old traditional education pattern, it does not imply that the morale will be enhanced as long as their advice is adopted. Furthermore, the formation and enhancement of morale depends on several vital factors, such as the encouragement from teachers, the competitive and cooperative atmosphere on campus, the feeling of honor and humility as part of the college, the sense of responsibility etc, which is relatively a complicated combination.
Secondly, a vital assumption in this recommendation is that the readopting(和上面那个recovery 一样,就是感觉不用再次采纳,而是一直沿用的意思,题目理解可能有误哈) of all-female education will persuade the alumni into providing financial support persistently, which is still open to doubt. Actually, the author fails to analyze the reasons and impetus for the alumni's previous financial support, which might appropriately, reveals the function and effect of recovery to traditional education style. (这句好哈)It is totally possible that the aims and purposes of the alumni's donation have nothing to do with whether female or male students are educated in this college, instead they care about how the money is spent properly and effectively to ameliorate the teaching conditions so as to further improve the performance of the students. Additionally, the author unfairly and simply equates the opposition of coeducation with all-female education. It is completely probable that the alumni oppose coeducation but in favor of all-male education. Therefore, the author’s suggestion is not able to reach the expected function, and the argument upon this assumption is unwarranted. (这段写的好哈,分析的很全面,论述也很充分,偶要学习哈)
Finally, the cited result of the survey upon which this claim relies if too vague to be informative. Common sense tells us that the sexual proportion of interviewees and the total number of respondents who answer the questionnaires have significant influence on the representative power of the survey. Particularly the absence of that information would seriously undermine the credibility of the recommendation.
To sum up, the president and management staff do not provide sufficient and warranted evidence to support the suggestion and additionally a scrutiny reveals how groundless the critical assumption is. To substantiate the claim, the author should present more convincing facts or other evidence concerning the attitudes and point of views of both students and alumni.
总的感觉点基本都分析到了,而且也展开论述的很充分,但是有个问题探讨下哈,偶写的时候也不知该怎么解决,就是在题目里有提到a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove这一点该怎么解决,究竟是驳斥他男女同校不一定带来学生的申请,还是其他什么的,偶没解决。。。
后来看了北美上有一段涉及的是放在moral improvement里的写的不错:
For example, since Grove's faculty are generally in favor of changing the policy, perhaps the change would improve faculty morale and therefore the quality of instructuion, in turn having a positive impact on alumni donations.
但是还是没有对more students to apply to Grove 有说明,或许根本就是偶多虑了哈。。。
