Who gives the society something of lasting value, the artist or the critic? The speaker asserts that the artist, as the original force of art, is more valuable than the critic. Whereas, in my view, the assertion neglects the importance of the critic. The critic and artist contribute in different ways, thus both give the society eternal values.

Admittedly, it is the artist, as the creator and innovator of art, who keeps the well of art filled with fresh water. Their ceaseless pursuing for beauty and great passion for creating, drive the art history forward, building the foundation of the art palace. The value of a masterpiece is everlasting and unchangeable. Think of the Homer poems, the Greek sculptures and the tragedies, they are the source of western art and play a vital part in the western culture. For thousand years, it is their spirit that has been encouraging and moving the following generations; it is their thought stimulated the following artist for new ideal of creation. Even nowadays, many art works as novels, films, music, are strongly influenced by them. One example is the film Matrix, whose ideal and evens has strong connection with the Bible and Greek mythology.

The artist, however, sometimes keeps a distance from the reader. They seem to be high above in the spiritual sky, leaving their works as impenetrable wall hard for the public to climb over. The meaning hiding in the art is too abstruse for most of people to comprehend. It is the work of critic, as a bridge over the distance between the public and the artists, introduces the reader into the fascinate art world. The critic digs out the meaning of the art, finds out the origin of symbols, and establishes the relationship inside between the arts, enabling the ordinary people to access the forbidden high place. James Joyce, who is considered to be the greatest writer in the last century, received a poor sale record of his novels when published. Most readers, without much training and experience, found it hard to read even a line of his work, especially the Ulysses, leaving alone to appreciate and praise it. However, after years studying and researching, the critics became recognizing the great values of Ulysses, and list it the first rank among the greatest novels. Unlike the popular publishes comes and leaves rapidly with no use of critic's help, more often than not, the lasting value of art should be revealed and transmitted by the critics.

Besides the discovering and understanding art, the critic's works itself are valuable, since reading is a process of recreation to the original one. Many writers themselves are critics, and their essays about his opinion to the art are as famous as their novels and poems. The critic works differ from the original creations, which are often comes from the sudden impose with strongly emotion expressing, especially the pomes. Rationally and logically, they try to find the structure of the story,and discusse the cause of its great beauty and the effect it react on readers. We enjoy the passion and beauty of art work with our sense while appreciate the wisdom of critic works with our rational thought.

In sum, the artist, as the source to fulfill the well of art with their creation and passion, while the critics act as the bucket and rope which are used to take water out off the well, filter it and provide for the public. Accordingly, they are working together and both give the society lasting value.

主要就改改语法拼写小错啦，我觉得语言很丰富，例子很多，尤其结构很好，三个分段很清晰。我自己的观点跟楼主的前两个差不多，不过好像例子举得有点片面，请指教
