The speaker claims that we can not choose both tradition and modernization at the same time. Though I concede that in some circumstances they are likely to contradict with each other, yet in most cases they are able to complement each other as long as we can treat them in an appropriate way.

To begin with, it is true that as the process of modernization exerts more and more influence on our society, sometimes the conflict between modernization and tradition are doomed to emerge. For instance, in the past we used to contact with our dear friends through hand writing letters. However, with the development of instant communications tools, most of us now communicate with each other by sending emails or using mobile phones. Even though this way of communication is more effective and convenient, we have to lose some special advantages of traditional methods of communication, such as the subtle affection through the words with pens. On the contrary, to preserve the precious culture traditions, some plans of constructions in some major cities, which can bring about prosperity in economy, are subject to prohibition. Therefore, it is inevitable to face up to such conflicts between modernization and maintaining tradition sometimes.

However, in spite of the existing disharmony, no one can deny that modernization can serve to preserving our traditions to a large extent. For example, by helping to make some important historical buildings survive, new technology, central part of modernization, will play a key role in preserving the traditional culture underlying these buildings. Besides, by constructing more and more modern museums reflecting the glorious culture created by our ancestors, we can both instilled the children with the traditional values and make them be proud of our traditions. Moreover, we can make use of the mass media, which is also a result of the modernization, to propagate the traditional culture and morality to our citizens. In a word, as long as we can utilize the modernization in a proper way, it is more likely that modernization can make us conform more to our tradition, instead of departing from it.

On the other hand, tradition can help to guide the direction to which the modernization is being carried out as well. Sometimes we have to admit that modernization is a double-edge sword. It can exert profound influence either in our physical world or spiritual world. And unfortunately, some influences are apt to be negative. In this occasion, traditional values, such as respects for other people and living in harmony with the nature can help. So, for example, if a new factory is going to be built in a city, its impacts on its neighborhood and the environment should be scrutinized by our tradition to ensure that it will not bring about serious pollution and inconvenience to the residents. Besides, in the process of modernization, we have to confront other culture, which sometimes can pose threat to our own, like they TV programs from other countries. So, by insisting on our own ways of thinking and judging lying in our tradition, we can resist its negative impacts.

To sum up, it is not necessary to abandon either modernization or tradition in most cases. Instead, we can take advantage of them to complement each other to guarantee the development of each one, therefore promoting the prosperity of our society.

觉得几个理由都很不错,而且举例也很充分,就是在举那传统和现代交流方式的例子时,叙述的方式要再refine一下,有点直白了,句子再复杂点~~没办法~~应试嘛~~~~
