TOPIC: ARGUMENT48 - The following appeared in a newspaper article published in the country of Corpora.

"Twenty years ago, one half of all citizens in Corpora met the standards for adequate physical fitness as then defined by the national advisory board on physical fitness. Today, the board says that only one quarter of all citizens are adequately fit and suggests that spending too much time using computers may be the reason. But since overall fitness levels are highest in regions of Corpora where levels of computer ownership are also highest, it is clear that using computers has not made citizens less physically fit. Instead, as shown by this year's unusually low expenditures on fitness-related products and services, the recent decline in the economy is most likely the cause, and fitness levels will improve when the economy does."

To support the conclusion that fitness level in Corpora parallel with the economy mutation, the author first cited a proclamation that only one quarter of all citizens are adequately fit, while one half of all citizens met the standards twenty years ago. In addition, the arguer stated that the board suggests that spending too much time using computers may be the reason, but next weaken this suggestion by pointing out that where computers is concentrated, the fitness level is also highest. However, a close examination of the argument reveals that it suffers from several fallacies.

A threshold problem with this argument is the assumption that everything that may has more or less impact on the fitness level of citizens in Corpora is immutable. It is, however, entirely possible that conditions have altered much during so long a time, as the argument presents, 20 years. For instance, the population in Corapora may have decrease, especially perhaps a large amount of juveniles and teenagers have left the area, which may leave the area most with the old and the ill, and thereby influence deeply the proportion of people who met such standards as brought out by national advisory board. Without ruling out alternative explanations for the mutation of the proportion of healthy people, it's unfairly to link it simply with the use of computer.

Furthermore, another problem in the argument is the ratiocination that highest level of fitness in regions of Corporas, where levels of computer ownership are also at peak, is the result of less popularity of computer among the citizens. The argument seems intentionally to avoid presenting other factors that may explain for this fitness level. Such factors may include numerous outside activities, health food, advancing medicine system, etc. With these probabilities that may occur simultaneously with highest portion of computer ownership not taken into account, it is too hasty to assert that the use of computers have profound impact on the fitness level of local people.

Finally, the arguer also unreasonably assumes that the low expenditures on fitness-related products and services might result in low fitness level. It's very much likely that economy hadn't decline in that area but on the contrary boosted up, since prosperity of economy where may lies inflation can leads to low retail price index. Also, low price can give people more benefit, because they can buy more these products to enhance their health. Accordingly, the assumption above is absurd.
