Issue26
"Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served."
Outline
1 Historic building is very meaningful on the base of their historic, aesthetic and architectural values.
2 Sometimes, when the ancient buildings seem to conflict with the modern development, we can reserve them by alternatives which would satisfy people and improve welfare of human being just as the modern development could do.
3 Even if the historic buildings have to give a way to modern instruction in some extreme situation, we should and could find out a balance between them.
It is the historic buildings, the best symbol of history, that make our mediocre human being meaningful and thoughtful. As far as the conflict between historic buildings and modern development is concerned, we, the intellectual and reasonable human being, should cherish or find out a balance between them.
Historic building is very meaningful on the base of their historic, aesthetic and architectural values. They are always the sedimentations of human culture and civilization, which make our human, as a whole, unique and great. The Forbidden City, for instance, is an appropriate example to illustrate this point. Whenever you stand in the Forbidden City, a deep and long nostalgia will immediately come into being and influence you in his/her own unique way and voice. The old palaces with their collections and history stories would profoundly purify our contaminated mind, soothe our distressed heart, and replenish our empty life by the whispering narration of their elegant structure, glorious past and beautiful legend. In this case, through the historic, aesthetic and architectural aspects of historic buildings, we could step away from our mundane and uproarious world for a while, which has been more and more difficult for the busy modern people.
Sometimes, when the ancient buildings seem to conflict with the modern development, we can reserve them by alternatives which would satisfy people and improve welfare of human being just as the modern development could do. The most effective and common method is to develop and flourish the economy by tourism. The Angkor city in Cambodia can serve as a good example to signify this point. By the tourism, Cambodian have increased their revenue and improved the life status of the people around this ancient city significantly, which would never otherwise be acquired trough any form of modern development, no matter the construction of residential buildings or reclaiming of farming lands. So, tourism or other alternatives may be chosen to assuage the conflict, or even on some degree to facilitate modern development.
Even if the historic buildings have to give a way to modern construction in some extreme situation, we should and could find out a balance between them. Aswan dam, for example, can furnish a paradigm to deal with some similar dilemma. For the common goods of the Egyptian, either the generation of hydraulic electricity or the prevention of flood, it is necessary to build this dam. Also, for the duration of human civilization and culture, and the resuming appreciation of their elegance by later generation, the old buildings and statues should be reserved completely. In this case, a balance, to dismantle and then restore the old building in another place, was found out to solve this problem. By doing so, more important historic buildings can be retained permanently for us and our offspring.
We are lucky in a world where we can enjoy the historic, aesthetic and architectural values of many splendid historic buildings, we would be happier when we can treasure or make a compromise to cater both the reserve of these old buildings and the modern development under necessary circumstance.
