The speaker confessed that the old buildings represent some cherish record of the society's past. But when faced that whether to maintain them if there are contemporary needs for setting up new buildings, he/she asserts that the modern needs should take the preference, with which I partly agree. Whether to replace the old building asks us to keep a balance between the protection of the historical values and the development of contemporary society which should be a case-by-case topic that considering a lot of different aspects.
The old buildings are often represents the historical landmarks of one place. No matter the elder citizens or the new generations can both gain information about the glory of their hometown's which is easily arouse the feeling of proud of the citizens. These historic buildings are valuable especially for the young generations since they are practical evidence of the past that is totally convinced when the youngsters are unable to experience. Furthermore, such buildings also good at telling people where are from, who they are and what they ought to realize. With the clear realization of the past is helpful for us to better development in the future.
Some of the old buildings are also the fruits of the talented architectures. These buildings are usually not common and contains a huge value of the arts, especially for those designed by the famous architects who already passed by. Once these valuable buildings were tore down, they will not be recovered, which also means the art's value already disappeared
Old buildings can also bring a lot benefits for the economic development of a city. They are attractive to the tourists for their historic value and art influence, which is probably guarantee a big amount of money from tourism to the city. Also, to maintain them rather than razing them are cost-efficient for the city government. At one hand, money on tearing down the old one, removing the relics and building more roads, relative public service are saved. On the other hand, to maintain the original situations is costless and more convenient to almost every citizen.
There are also some old buildings that have neither historic values, nor safety and profitable. If there several similar old buildings represent the same historic value, some of them might be replaced for the modern needs of more spaces. If some old buildings are too old that even high-technical reinforcement can not assure the safety of them, it is better to replace them with modern buildings which not only can better satisfied our needs, but also assure the safeness of the people.
