ARGUMENT180The following is a recommendation from the personnel director to the president of Acme Publishing Company.[34]
"Many other companies have recently stated that having their employees take the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. One graduate of the course was able to read a five-hundred-page report in only two hours; another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year. Obviously, the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday. Moreover, Easy Read costs only $500 per employee—a small price to pay when you consider the benefits to Acme. Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter. Clearly, Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of our employees to take the Easy Read course."
C: recommend all our employees to take the Easy Read course.
A: faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday.
A:500 per employee is a small price to pay when your consider the benefit to Acme
E: One graduate of the course was able to read a five-hundred-page report in only two hours
Another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year
Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter.
Base on two assumptions that the employees will benefit a lot through taking the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course and Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of their employees to take the Easy Read, the director recommends that all the employees should take the Easy Read. To support, the director points out two graduates have improved after the course. However, this alone neither constitutes a logical argument in favor of the conclusion, nor provides compelling evidence to make the commendation sound.
A threshold assumption upon which the director relies is that the employee can improve much by taking the course. Unfortunately, the evidences the director provides are open to doubt. On one hand, merely two graduates cannot represent the whole people who have taken the course. If they are the only two members who get improvement during the course, it is dangerous and unwarranted to propose the employees to take the course. On the other hand, chance is that, the graduate who is able to read a five-hundred-page report in only two hour have genius in reading, before he goes to the course, he can read the same pages already. In addition, it is entire possible that the assistant manager rose to vice president is due to his other characters such as leadership, ability, or even knowledge which has nothing to do with the course he took. Hence without considering other alternative explanations which will be responsible for his rise, we cannot presumptuous draw a conclusion that the Easy Read courses do benefit the graduate.
Another unproven assumption is that the benefits or the knowledge the graduates get are useful to our employees, even if they can get benefits. Firstly, the director commits a false analogy between the Acme and other companies. The qualities of the employees of Acme may vary much from members of other companies. If Acme employees do not need amelioration in reading, it will be worthless or wasteful to take the course for Acme members
Even both of the assumptions have been sufficient supported, we should not have all the employees take the courses. Maybe improvement in reading speed does little help to better work. Furthermore, wasting of three weeks of the employees will bring a burden to Acme.
In sum, the recommendation seems logical at first has several flaws as discussed above. To make the argument more convincing, the director should provide more information concerning the graduates and conditions of the employees in Ace as well as the other possible alternatives lead to the assistant’s rise. Without make clear these possibilities, we can not draw any direct conclusion. |
