argument 235

235.The following appeared in a memorandum from the general manager of KNOW radio station.

"Several factors indicate that radio station KNOW should shift its programming from rock-and-roll music to a continuous news format. Consider, for example, the number of older people in our listening area has increased dramatically, while the total number of our listeners has recently declined. Also, music stores in our area report decreased sales of recorded music. Finally, continuous news stations in neighboring cities have been very successful, and a survey taken just before the recent election shows that local citizens are interested in becoming better informed about politics."

In the assertion the speaker reommends that KNOW(K) should convert to a news broadcasting station rather than continue programming rock-and-roll as used to do. To support this recommendation the speaker cites the following reasons: (1) aged people in the area keeps increasing. (2) music stores are just sufferring from a sale depression. (3) people in the neighboring city found their interests in political activities because of a recent election. Close scrutiny of each of these reasons, however, reveals that none of them lend credible support to the recommendation.

First, the recommendation based on what might be a weak assumption that aged people have no interest in Rock-and-roll. Further, the speaker reasons that with the help of this assumption K's listeners would necessarily decrease in that old people in the area has increased dramatically. However, the speaker provides no evidence that old people hate rock-and-roll. Nevertheless, a dramatical increase fails to support the speaker when it comes to that although there was an increase, this increase still pales in amount compared with that of youth. Perhaps, these old people are super rock-and-roll fans, who has moved to this area just because K's Rock-and-roll Program. It is also possible that these aged people have neither interests in pop music nor news, thus have no relationship with our programming. I remain unconvinced unless the speaker could verify the prediction on old people.

Second, the fact that sales of recorded in music stores in the area decreased accomplishes nothing toward bolstering the recommendation. It is highly possible that people in this area are so used to listen to K's high-quality Rock-and-roll program that there is no need to buy or rent any more. Nevertheless, it is also possible that while the music stores' sale decrease, the overall rent bussiness adversely increase, which results in a banlance of huge profit. Or, perhaps people in this area are hard-pressed by an undesirable economic crisis, in which there might be less money left for appreciating rock-and-roll. If so, K's has to continue to provide Rock-and-roll service in order to reassure an please these loyal listeners. Lacking of reasons why music sales in this area dropped down, the author are unwarranted to make further recommendation.

Third, even though the two assumptions mentioned above are valid, why K took it as granted that featuring neighboring city is the only way, toward which we might succeed in reprogramming? This claim is problematic in three aspects: (1) the survey of people in the neighboring city might be biased that large part of the respondents are not representative. (2) It is highly possible that political issues serve as only a vogue in the city which would fade and disgusting in predictable future. If so, shifting programming from rock-and-roll to news live might brought about huge opportunity cost. (3) Neighboring people's caring about election amounts little in summarizing that they are willing to listen to news. Perhaps they prefer live shows rather than radio broadcasting. Even if these three aspects are totally true, I also remain unconvinced that K might have other better options other than shifting to news topic. If GRE analytical writting promise a lasting pursuit in that area, K should focus on test assistance but not live news.

In sum, the recommendation relies on certain doubtfull assumptions that render it unconvincing as it stands. To bolster the recommendation the speaker should provide clear evidence that old people---- given they are the majority, dislike Rock-and-roll. To better assess the recommendation, I would need to know the fact of sale decreasing among local music stores, I also need to know whether there are other options aide from catering for the public in ANOTHER city.
