"Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
Words: 386 time: >4h 汗!!
提纲
The speaker contents that one must choose between tradition and modernization for the reason that they are incompatible. In my view, it is true that in certain aspects modernization and tradition exclude each other, but in most cases they coexist harmoniously.
In the one hand, tradition is the precondition and foundation to improve modernization in that modernization is actually new development of past tradition in present age. For example, modern buildings are just a typical result from such process. Compared with ancient ones, modern buildings preserve their basic function--built for human habitation. Their shapes and structures, however, vary from one generation to another. In recent century, high-rise buildings appeared in big cities to fit the demand for housing, which take up less space in impacted area. It is undoubted that high-rise buildings are representative combination of tradition technology and modern demand. Without tradition, modernization will lack objects to extend or vary.
In the other hand, modernization is an effective approach to conserve tradition. With the development of modern science and technology, we can protect historical materials more availably than ever before. For example, in Chongqing, a southwest city of China, specialists develop an especial equipment to prevent a carved stone, a cultural relic named Baiheliang, which lies in bottom of Yangtze River. The equipment is designed to be transparent so it is easy for one to view and study, and it is also firm to confront current corrupt. Without modern protection technology, rare human relic, such as Baihuliang mentioned above, will disappear more quickly.
I concede that, in some cases, there is a conflict between tradition and modernization. For example, a historical relic lies in the plan line of an important highway, or an old handicraft is on the verge of being lost because it is not needed by modern life any more. If we have not enough money to change the highway design or retrieve the losing handicraft, tradition will sacrifice itself to yield to modernization needs. However, in such cases, we still should try our best to avoid sacrificing tradition and blocking modernization.
To sum up, in most area of human activity, tradition and modernization live in concord. This is especially true in building design and culture relic protection. One should not choose only one between tradition and modernization while overlooking the other.
