TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the
college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend
time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the
courses they teach."
WORDS: 551 TIME: 1:18:22 DATE: 2006-8-24
Whether the faculty of college and university should work outside the
academic world is being discussed by more and more people among
students and teachers. Part of people advocate that faculty, whose goal
is to teach and impart the knowledge on books, should stand on their
scholar field, however, I deem that working outside the academic
world relevantly is also needed for pragmatic purpose.
First of all, we must recognize that there are a myriad of problems in
our modern education. Affected deeply by the traditional approaches
which have been existed for years, the main means of teachers to impart
knowledge is dull, monotonous and insipid. Theories take up the major
part of their class, and the abstract concept is ambiguous to students
to understand. Gradually, students begin to lose their interests and
persistence to go on their studying, especially when they find the
theory they ever learned has little correlation with the reality or
the work they are going to choose, at the same time, faculty always
stay staid with the finite theory and infinite unknown. Our college
students and faculty fall into a durance, limiting their imagination
and eyesight.
Facing the dilemma, faculty need to walk out the university full filled
with academic circumstance. For one hand, teachers with profound basic
and fundamental knowledge of some profession could turn their knowledge
into practice or even production, then their research fruition will be
checked and evaluated in turn. For another, they could keep pace with
the contemporary development in their particular areas which imbued
with updated knowledge. Consequently, the students can learn more
practical knowledge and instructions from the faculty, and benefit
themselves when they step into society. Therefore, it is necessary for
the faculty to work for practice.
However, there come some negative aspects such distraction and desire
for money, which are inavoidable. Assignment and work outside college
will undoubtedly distract the faculty's attention on courses, and
undermine the time spent on college works. Among illustrations of this
truth which might be cited, the behavior of faculty from my business
school furnishes a cogent example. Teachers in my business school often
accept the invitations from commercial enterprise for cooperation.
Although these teachers also brought the up-to-date business knowledge
which may being changing everyday, we can find that their outside
working have affected their teaching considerable in that not only
they, more often than not, are late for classes, and quality of classes
are degraded. We are enjoying the fresh knowledge at same time,
suffering the lower level classes.
Recognizing the importance an necessity of letting teachers work
outside academic environment, which will add utility of the academic
knowledge, we should emphasize more on students' morality and
characteristic. As Martin Luther King put it (and I
paraphrase)"intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true
education." Teachers should take more to prevent students' morality
erosion. Contemporary students are becoming more utilitarian as their
teachers. In order to pursue higher grades, they often plagiarize,
betraying their moralities.
In sum, it is necessary and worthy for the teachers to work outside the
academic world, for students indeed can benefit from a lot, and the new
and fresh knowledge and approached can make the dull classes vivid. But
we should not ignore the significance of teaching students' morality,
which is the true goal of education. |
