TOPIC: ARGUMENT235 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the general manager of KNOW radio station.
"Several factors indicate that radio station KNOW should shift its programming from rock-and-roll music to a continuous news format. Consider, for example, the number of older people in our listening area has increased dramatically, while the total number of our listeners has recently declined. Also, music stores in our area report decreased sales of recorded music. Finally, continuous news stations in neighboring cities have been very successful, and a survey taken just before the recent election shows that local citizens are interested in becoming better informed about politics."

The argument which suggested that KNOW station should shift its programming from rock-and-roll music to a continuous news format is well presented, but it is questionable if we think about it carefully.
First of all, although the older people have in the listening area has increased dramatically; it has nothing to do with the possible decreases in rock-and-roll music programming. Also, the population in the area declined recently, but further evidence is needed to prove that the rock-and-roll listeners of KNOW station decrease. It is possible that the population who moved out of the area is very busy people and they almost never spend time listening to the radio. So their leaving does not effect the listeners of music at all.
In addition, the decreased sales of local recorded music cannot act as a convictive evidence that local people lose the interests in listening to the music which plays in the radio station. On the contrary, they may be so satisfied with the music played by the radio station that they do not want to spend extra money to buy recorded music from stores. Also, perhaps the decreased sales of recorded music were caused by other reasons instead of the losing interest of people in music. For example, there may used to be a lot of visitors who buys a lot of recorded music for the local stores. And the number of them decreased recently for some reason.
Also, the success of the continuous news in neighboring cities cannot ensure the success in this area. What if the citizens in neighboring with different education or other backgrounds are more concerted in news compared to the people in this area? Alternatively, they are bigger cities so that the total population is larger which makes them have more potential listeners. It is also possible that there is just limited numbers of continuous news ratio in neighboring cities while there are already too many in this area. If the KNOW station changes their programs, they have to confront more competition, which may be fatal to the business of the KNOW station.
Finally, without doubting about the validity of the survey which shows that local citizens are interested in becoming better informed about politics, we have to consider that they may not choose news radio to get the politics news since they may find TV and internet are more effective sources.
To sum up, before the final decision is made, it is very necessary to make sure the number of listeners declines corresponding to the decreases in local population, think about other possibilities of the reason why the sales of recorded music decrease recently and get more reliable results from the surveys. Also, be cautious to the comparison between this area and its neighboring cities before more details have been gained.
