TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

I agree with the assertion that it is the people who made significant events and trends, since the history itself is a creation of all human beings. Nevertheless, such consideration does not mean we do not need place emphasis on individuals, who devoted more and distinctly to the development of history, because the study of them is an effective way to learn history, as well as we can learn the qualities of them.
History is a complicated issue, influenced by the people who once took parts in it. Every individual could change the history, even the effect was little. When the effects amassed, significant events and trends occurred. The famous ones' function was leading the people to a direction, with their savvy and abilities. Consider how Franklin D. Roosvelt overcame the World War II against Germany and Japan, for instance. He made correct decisions to strike back and help the Europe, but only when these decisions were realized by the American people, who joined army, devoted in military factories and so forth, the history was changed. Another striking example involves the development of modernism architecture. The modernism masters, including Mies Van De Lo, Le Cobusier and Gropius, developed modern architecture, as well as the theory that suggests human chose a functional and creative way for constructions. But the only hundreds of buildings designed by them were not enough to make modernism architecture stretch to the global world. As soon as the government and people of each country realized the value of modernism architecture, they turned to build their home like what the masters did, pushing the architecture history into a new era.
However, we remember Franklin D. Roosvelt, and the masters, but not the people who made their thoughts come true. Why the history tell us in this way, according to me, is that remembering leaders can provide an effective way to brand the history and idols for us to study from.
There are so many people once lived in our world that we can not remember them separately, but the famous are few. We can take every distinct individual's story as a lesson and learn how he influenced the people in his period. In other words, the famous people will give us a direct and impressing issue about the history. Return to President Roosvelt, he was a significant individual during that period, and presented the American spirit most strikingly. He stood for the ideal of independence and justice, lead the American people defeat invaders. Such actions can stand for that period, for how the people struggled.
It seems to me that the object for us to learn history is to use the knowledge from it deal with nowadays affairs. In that sense, the famous can tell us more with their distinct qualities. The architects today have all taken the modernism architects mentioned above as their examples, no matter whether they agree with the perception of modernism. The earnest attitude and accurate method of designing which the modernism masters presented are canonical and useful when we face the new challenges of the world's construction.
To sum, the history tells us not only about the individuals, we cannot neglect what the groups of people did, which truly directed the world. Meanwhile, the famous are also worth our attentions, as long as we know their functions rightly. In this proper way, the history will help us come a long way toward facing the future. |
