ISSUE 1: 48 "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
ISSUE 2: 112 "Some educational systems emphasize the development of students' capacity for reasoning and logical thinking, but students would benefit more from an education that also taught them to explore their own emotions."
ARGU: 143.The following appeared as a letter to the editor of a national
newspaper.
"Your recent article on corporate downsizing* in the United States is
misleading. The article gives the mistaken impression that many competent
workers who lost jobs as a result of downsizing face serious economic
hardship, often for years, before finding other suitable employment. But
this impression is contradicted by a recent report on the United States
economy, which found that since 1992 far more jobs have been created than
have been eliminated. The report also demonstrates that many of those who
lost their jobs have found new employment. Two-thirds of the newly created
jobs have been in industries that tend to pay above-average wages, and the
vast majority of these jobs are full-time."
Downsizing is the process in which corporations deliberately reduce the
number of their employees.

The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."
