观点 虽然后代对人的看法可以有改变 一个人的伟大可以有同代人来决定
1 艺术领域可能会有被忽略的情况
2 科学领域同时代的人可以决定一个人伟大与否
3 政治领域也是一样
Is the greatness of individuals decided only by those who live after them rather than by their contemporaries as the speaker claims? I concede the brilliant accomplishments could remain, even ascend their values by the reevaluation by descendents, which cause the better known to the greatness of a people. However, in fields such as science and politics, the greatness of individuals, which determined by their ideas, achievements along with the consequences of their action, could be assessed and recognized by their contemporaries.
In the fields of art, the greatness of some great artists may sometimes be neglect by those societies. A well known example is that Van Gogh, the most valuable painter at present, was not well treated in his time, and even discarded by others. His works were also not accepted by multitudes, so he had only sold one piece of painting through his life. However, currently, Van Gogh's master piece, the sunflowers, is one of the most expensive paintings in the world. And he is also considered as one of the most talented artists. What's more, the greatness of artists could be reevaluated in other periods. The origins of his works, the contribution to the art and even the society may vary deemed in different eras. From the standpoint of later generations, people could recognize the entire background of the period when the artist living, and assess their contributions in the historical and critical eyes.
However, in the science areas, such as the chemistry, the physics, the engineering subjects, the geography and the like, we have amounts of convincing methods to assess the greatness of a scientist. Though there exist some genius theories was not admitted at the time when they were discovered. Such as the evolution theory was depressed by the religious groups and not persuasive to other scientists as well when it was published, the greatness of that individual may not be neglected in his era in that there are many other features for a society to assess the value of individuals. Mostly, a scientist could establish his state by publishing many papers to illustrate his thoughts and discoveries, even some of them are not proved to be correct, and their achievements in other aspects may demonstrate their excellence. For example, the importance and credibility of Einstein’s relative theory was not totally explored in the 1920s and even nowadays, but his contributions in the field of quantum still bring him world wide fame and Nobel Prize in that time.
In addition, in the political areas, the consequence of activities initialized by some politicians could be evident and therefore easy to assess. The New Policy which was enacted by Roosevelt lead to the recovery of the Great Depression and made the American economy revival. In this case, the greatness of politicians could be observed through what they have done and the consequences of their behaviors. At present as well the past, seldom have people in political area won fame and respect after the death, or otherwise, when a politician cannot contribute to the well-beings of the contemporary citizens, he will be a great one neither currently or in the future. Because the nature of politics is inherently defined through provide solutions to existing problems.
To sum up, the greatness of individuals, in most occasions and fields, are recognized by their coevals, however, in some particular issues, the achievements may be reevaluated afterward and the greatness of individuals could be altered, either enhanced or weaken. |
