I fundermentally agree with the speaker that nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology and paranormal pursuits still play a vital role in society,for the two chief reasons that they satisfy the basic needs of humans and a great number of people consider them scientific.However,such inquiries are irrational and they are more likely to bring about serious harm to their participants and society.

Why are nonmainstream areas of inquiries so popular among people in modern times of highly-advanced technology. First of all,to some degree,they meet the psychological needs of human beings.In the society full with drastic competition and adventure,it is inevitable for a large portion of people to generate a sense of frustration and crisis.Under such situation,they instinctively need to seek an approach that enable them to release from anxiety and direct them a right path to success.Those nonmainstream areas such as astrology which tell people their future fate and how to proceed in life ,thereby naturally become the target they resort to.

Secondly,people are not able to distinguish the real science and those nonmainstream inquries in the light of their inherent nature of equivocality and mystery.With the rapid development of science,it is divided delicately into various branches of subjects each of which has its own technical terms that the majority of people can not understand or have never ever heard of. In those nonmainstream areas also contain such kinds of terms that are mysterious to people.Thus,it is easy for the masses to mistakenly consider, for example,astrology whose technical terms sound relative to astronomy as a scientific field.Furthermore,the government of some certain districts even encourage those who live on telling fortune and divining for others.For instance,in some states of the US,the government grants those astrologists business licenses and give official sanction to open astrology schools.The legitimacy of astrology precipitates the deeper trust of those nonmainstream areas of inquiries gained from the masses.

Nonetheless, actually those nonmainstream areas ,to a great extent ,are pseudoscience which are worthless to be believed in and admired.Take astrology as an example.According to the theory of astrology,one’s own destiny and character are determined by the date of its birth and the constellation. In the year of 1975,a physicist named John Mcgarvey carried out an experiment that he investigated 16634 scientists and 6475 politicians and their birthdays as well.However,the statistics  demonstrated that the dates of their birth did not converge on one certain constellation but distributed averagely all over of them.Another apt illustration of this point involves the instance of Voltaire。When he retrospected to the huge earthquake of Lisban which led to the deaths of fifteen thousands of people，he said(and I paraphrase),”all those victims had the same fate but the constellation of heir births were totally different.” The theories of westen astrology and those nonmainstream inquiries indeed do not refer merely to the constellation,they include complicated contents,yet the analysis of destiny and all that are irrational pseudoscience.

Therefore,due to the irrationality of those nonmainstream pursuits,we should only treat them as entertainment but not the guidance to tell us how to proceed in life,otherwise we will fall prey to the pseudoscience.Here is an example that is convincing.Ronald Reagan ,the previous president of the United States, over-rely on astrology for his every important decision and even the fate of this country were dominated by a female astrologist .This astrologist ,nevertheless ,had never prophesied the Iran-Contra Affair which rendered Reagan quite embarrassed and even make him face the risk of impeachment. Imagine how a society could progress provided that every member depends on those nonmainstream pursuits for help.Thus,what we should believe is that the fate is simply controlled by ourselves.

To sum up,I concede that those nonmainstream pursuits that the speaker lists are likely to offer many people psychological solace.However,such pursuits are not originated from correct logic and reason.Once they become a guidance to steer people’s lives and the fate of society,the potential danger and harm are immeasurable.

找出问题的逻辑层次，从最关键的问题开始批驳，然后层层递减，后续问题都是承认前一个问题如果合理，那么什么什么还是不正确，因为什么什么，依次类推
