ISSUE 50 "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

date:2007-01-02 120minnuts 573 words

Although some people worries that college or university teachers' involvement in professional works may cost them too much time that will inevitably decrease the quality of teaching, I support the author's statement that all faculty should be required to spare time working in the professions relevant to the courses they teach for its overall benefits to teaching weighs much more than its disadvantages

The experience of working in professional work will continuously improve college or university teachers' skills, which therefore improves the teaching effect. Nowadays, more and more technology or even art advances are made in cooperation's own labs, such as personal computer, optical communication systems, and so on. These high-tech advances require people to have a high level of integrating and innovating ability, which is also needed for teachers in their own academic areas. What is more, because the cooperation funded research projects usually have urgent schedules as well as strict and high requirements on the final result, those projects force people to learn new knowledge and take precise experiments in a very efficient way, which can not easily be experienced in pure academic researches and is of great value to formulate people's character. Thus, teachers involved in professional works can learn a lot from them, and improve their ability to teaching work.

Another great benefit teachers can derive from the professional works is that they get familiar with the society's real need, thus can be more tailored to arrange teaching contents. As technology and social ideas among many phenomenons are evolving in a fast ever speed, the relatively fixed or slowly updated college curriculums are always be complained by students, saying they are out of date or of no use. Since an important aim of modern education is to provide society with various kinds of highly skilled people, the college or university teacher's first hand information for his or her discipline’s application in society would surely help him or her to properly refresh teaching contents, that is eliminating some out-dated knowledge, maintaining the most fundamental or principle theories to a discipline and adopt or enlarge the really practical ones. From this experiencing and updating scheme, the knowledge structure learned from these teachers would always be reasonable and practical, which improves the real effect of education.

However, just as every thing should be confined under certain type of regulations, unconstrained involvement of professional works may largely decrease teacher's concentration on teaching and instructing, thus is harm to the quality of overall education effect. Just as said above, the requirement of professional works in many firms are usually so strict that many people are usually exhausted to accomplish his or her own responsibility, not to say teachers who also need extra time to give lectures and cultivate students. The great bundle of pressure derived from those works would easily force teachers to choose to pay less time on teaching, since teaching effect is to some degree difficult to evaluate and thus less likely for them to suffer from this effect decline. If this really happens, the lost to their students would be tremendous.

From the statements above, although requiring college and university faculties to spend time working out side academic may cause them to treat teaching work in a less devoted way, if proper measures can be taken to confine teachers too much involvement in professional work, the overall benefit derived from this scheme would certainly improve the quality of our college and university education.

Although some people worries (worry) that college or university teachers' involvement in professional works may cost them too much time (cost后面好像不能接人吧)that will inevitably decrease the quality of teaching, I support the author's statement that all faculty should be required to spare time working in the professions relevant to the courses they teach for its overall benefits to teaching weighs much more than its disadvantages(换个与benefit对应的词吧,detriment? 我也不知道 呵呵)

Thus, teachers involved in professional works can learn a lot from them (这个them指代啥?), and improve their ability to teaching work.

Just as said above, the requirement of professional works (working) in many firms are usually so strict that many people are usually exhausted to accomplish his or her own responsibility, not to say teachers who also need extra time to give lectures and cultivate students. 快速地读了一遍没有发现什么问题,句子都挺清楚的,结构也明晰。比我写得好多了,值得我学习才是。
有点小问题就是一些长句的使用上读起来比较生硬,呵呵,有待继续操练。
