WORDS: 620 TIME: 0:49:19 DATE: 2007-1-15
Do the nonmainstream areas play a vital role in scoiety, as the arguer’s mentioned? I agree the speaker's assertion to some extent. The merely fact is that the nonmainstream research actually responds to some human needs, but if people over-enthusiastic to these areas it would bring negative effects on our society.
In anctient society, when the science and technology were not suffiently advanced and there were so many unknown phenomenon hard to explain, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry served as a major role in people societal life. When people hold a ceremony or ritual, they would use these inquiry as asrtology or fortune-telling to get the conduction which they thought obtained from the god, and depends on which they explain some we now known as the natural phenomon such as drought and flood or widespread epidemic disease. They also use these methods to make the decision of some crucial things such as predicting the result of the war or the denstiny of their country. Although these things now we viewed unbelievable and unconvinciable, people at that time took it seriously.Besides, some now we known as the mainstream research stem from these nonmainstream areas. The most typical example is the astronomy which spring from astrology. Although astrology now is thought as not a formal science, but it has an important postition in the history of science. There were also some significant invention we still used now is on the basis of these nonmainstream areas, such as calendar, its invention was depended on the observation of the moving orbit of the stars in atrology by these antient people.
when it comes to the modern society, the influence of the nonmainstream areas has been overshadowed, But it still meet some certain human needs. On one hand, the nonmainstream areas can provide some entertainment for people if they take it not seriouly, many people like to play tarot cards to predict his or her destiny. On the other hand, in a person's life, there are too many dilemmas that we can hard to make our decsion. When we choose one, and it may be possible that in the retrospect, we might feel regret and blame for oursleves when the result is not satisfied. In this matter, these nonmainstream areas of inquiry can release and share the psychological burden for these people avoide to undertake the whole responsibility. On still other hand, when it comes to the problem of mortal, no people can confront it with a lightening attitude. We would feel fear with these unknown things. The nonmainstream area of inquiry such as psychic and paranormal pursuits can let people believe the afterlife and comfort these people who lost their important family members and friends, and face the death with confidence.
However, if people are over-enthusiastic to the pursuits of these nonstream areas, it have the inclination to do harm to our daily life and stability of our scoiety. If we believe the astrology or fortune-telling to an extremely extent, and we make all decisions depending on the result of these nonstream inquiry and take it as the excuse if the result of the choose convinced wrong. Understandablely, people would become vulnerable to self-deception and live in a illusory world constructed by himself. If people are stubborn to adherence of these irrational belief, this may even lead to the aggressive action to other people and anti-society behavior.
In sum, we can hardly deny the nonmainstream areas of inquiry do meet some human basic needs and in antient times it is indisputalbly vital in societal life. But in modern society, its function has been outweighed. Besides, placing too much reliance on these nonmainstream areas may have negative effect on our daily and do harm to the society.
Outline:
1.the nonmainstream is important in the past, when the scienticfic research is not very advanced. And many significant invention denpended on the research of nonmainstream such as calendar..and some now mainstream research stem from nonmainstream areas such as astronomy.
2.In modern society, the impact of nonmainstream is reduced, but it still very important to our life, For example, about the religious research, the astrology and fortune-telling can be used to entainment. And comfort some people suffur from disarster
3.But the over-emthusiastic to the non-mainstream research will do harm to our soceity.
