"Such no mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science." 一些非主流的领域,如占星、算命以及偏执在社会中扮演着非常重要的角色,它们满足了人们的那些主流科学满足不了的需要
提纲:完全同意
1.满足了人的需要,原因:古代是知识太少了,解释不了自然现象;现在是人们的压力大选择太多无从下手,需要精神寄托
2.对社会很重要,好好用有好处;被利用有坏处

关于科学能不能满足,我只是在第一段里提了一句,没有展开论述

开头没用模板之类的咚咚,完全是突然想起来的,用的是:从电影 灵异第六感 引出话题;其实本来想用 巫师给林肯招魂的例子来,不知道怎么写也没查资料,就用第六感了,我想林肯的例子也应该不错


“The dead do not know they are dead. They continue to do what have not been done when they are alive. They can only see those who they want to see. These dead people cannot be seen by ordinary people but become visible to a little boy who strangely obtained this ability.” This is what is depicted by a popular movie named The Sixth Sense in which reflects an eternal issue about the livings and the dead and their connections, or, to be more professional, the paranormal pursuit. Does people need it? Is it important and necessary to society? And why?

I cannot find out any other reasons except the satisfying function of these paranormal pursuit that could explain the popularity among people throughout the long history of human beings. The research of astrology, fortune telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuit is almost as long as human history and they play such a dramatic role in deciding war, the changing of an national leader and the destiny of an individual in ancient times. Some scientists believe supernatural force while more deny the existence of it. The battle has been fought for thousands of years and stretched to modern times. The point is, however, not whether it is scientific which involves another dilemma of the definition of science, but the cause. The reason accounting for its importance is humanity---the human inherent of longing for eternal and the comfort of spirit. It is quite interesting since it seems that in the pursuit of science hoping to overthrow the control of the non-mainstream inquiry people finally find themselves are still in the charge of it. In ancient times limited knowledge that could not interpret natural phenomena forced humans to turn for help to some unknown supernatural beings while with enormous science in hand people still desperately find that they have also been put a heavy burden on shoulders and infinite choices in mind which make people feel it difficult to form a right decision and this in turn gives people experiences of uncertainty, insecurity, confusion, even anti-social activities and hatred. Something must be done to help to avoid these dangerous ideas which would lead to illegal activities. Science is only certain in a certain areas mainly including external world while explains little about the internal colony. Where the mainstream loses its power, the non-mainstream booms. Although lots of scientists criticize its shortage of scientific explanations, it does cease the anxiety, ease the pressure and comfort the spirit.

The goodness and the potential dangerous make it specially important to the security and stability of a society. The concerns about these non-mainstream inquiries must be take seriously when it climbs to a social height. The activist of the inquiry must be care not to guide his/her advocates to the wrong directions, the government must take the duty to make sure the inquiry is not used for secret and illegal purpose, and the public must have a sense of responsibility to oversee these activities. The reason lays in its power to obtain people’s trust and even control of people’s mind. When it is used for good purpose of giving people a resting place for spirit, it contributes significantly to the harmony of society. When some one uses it for his/her own interest, the consequences are serious. Some evil cults take the advantages of this power and cause economy and lives loss. While I have no recommendation of encouraging this kind of inquiry, I should not condemn it either.
The answer to the questions I proposed is clear that people-thousands of years before and/or maybe after- need the inquiry of non-mainstream which accounts for its important role in society.

1.The point is, however, not whether it is scientific which involves another dilemma of the definition of science, but the cause.【这句话我没怎么读懂啊】  这句我写得确实有些罗嗦,定语从句用滥了……我的意思是想说“关键不是这些非主流的咚咚是不是科学的,关键在于他们的起因是什么,就是说,重点应该在于去考察非主流的这些咚咚的产生原因:古代是因为知识有限,现在是因为人们的压力太大”。也许把定语从句去掉就应该清楚一点了
2.which make people feel it difficult to form a right decision and this in turn gives people experience【这个词做经验讲,应该是不可数,而且我觉得这个地方用这个词不是很恰当】 of uncertainty, insecurity, confusion, even anti-social activities and hatred. 我这个地方的experience 是取它做“经历,感受”的意思,我曾经见过这么一种用法:experience uncertainty,我这里只是把动词改成了名词,应该没问题。
3.The concerns about these non-mainstream inquiries must be take seriously when it climbs to a social height.这个是不是有点qing-English.  呵呵,climb这个词是我写得时候突然想起来的,前几天在网上看到最近科学界对全球气温变暖很关注,同时还发表了不少的文章,我在看得时候就记住了climb:"the climbing sea levels", 虽然在google上查不到climb to a social height“上升到社会的高度”,但是新概念四里面的一片文章里有一句:social climbers(应该是关于青年的那一篇里的),所以我觉得我这么用应该没多大问题吧。
