TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

The president of a chain of cheese stores which located throughout the United States recommends that in order to improve profits， the store should concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses while discontinue imported cheeses. The recommendation is based on the selling condition of the newest store and a convey of a magazine called Cheeses of the World. After careful scrutiny of the memo, I find the recommendation is not reasonable.

First of all, there is no information about the price and other conditions of the domestic cheeses and the imported cheeses. It is entirely possible that the domestic cheeses is much cheaper than the imported ones. As a result, most people prefer the cheaper ones in order to save money. Nevertheless, selling more domestic cheeses, which are much cheaper, may not bring more money than selling the import ones a little more. Without considering this possible condition, the selling condition can not give us enough information about the profits when discontinuing stocking the imported cheeses.

Even if the domestic cheeses really brings more profits when it is sold better than the import ones, there are not enough evidences to show that the domestic ones are more popular than import ones. The best-selling cheeses at the newest store are all domestic ones, as the president says. However, the condition of one store may not represent all of the stores in chain. We do not know whether the newest store is in Wisconsin, the cheeses of where is much cheaper because of the transportation is much easier. Or maybe people in that area tend to buy the domestic products for they have no chance to know about any import ones before the store opened recently. Besides, the survey by the magazine may not reflect the taste of most people correctly. If only a few persons have took part in the survey, the result is not credible. And the survey does not prove that the contents of the questionare has no inclination that the readers who prefer import cheeses will also take part in. Without enough evidence to prove that most people in the country prefer domestic cheeses, the recommendation may not bring profits to the stores.

The president does not consider other ways to improve profits aside from concentrating on the domestic cheeses only. Maybe selling the domestic cheeses much cheaper in order to stimulate the customers to buy more, and using better ways to store the cheese which will save more money than the way used nowadays, thay can also improve profits. The conclusion the president claims may not be the best one.

In sum, the recommendation the president gives may not be useful. To support the recommendation, the president should give more information about the newest store and the survey in order to prove that people are really prefer the domestic cheese. At the same time, the condition of the price of two kinds of cheeses should be provided as well.
