I17"There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
my position: agree
1 for the public safety and even nation security, we have to obey laws that are just
2 for the progress of society, we have the responsibility to resist unjust laws (Martin Ruther King)
3 when it comes to the point that whether a law is just or unjust,
When we were still in primary schools, we have been taught that laws are the representative of justice and fairness; however, as we
grow old and obtain a good command of the ability of discerning right from wrong, we may find that even in a democratic society,
the laws would have flaws in them. Then, we are trapped in the dilemma that what attitude we should take towards laws.
First of all, we should keep in mind that laws that a government establishes to maintain the society in peace and to protect the benefit
of most citizens should be obeyed and respected. Imaging that in a society without any laws, what will happen? I'm afraid such a
society won't last very long. Perhaps someone may oppose my view with morality that can also serve to regulate human's behavior.
However, we just need to look back on the history when there was no law and we would find how absurd it is that we totally depend
on morality that has no united standard for every individual and no penalty for guilt. Laws are necessary if we want the whole world in
order, and we must conduct our behavior under their guidance.
However, when we are confronted with the "black sheep"--unjust laws--in the law system, do we still need to obey, and even respect
them? My answer is absolutely no. If we compromise to those unjust laws, it would result in acquiescence to unfairness that will
undermine the democratic frame of our society and impede the advance of civilization. Without Martin Luther King's effort to resist
the unjust laws imposed on the black, there would be no equal freedom and justice for all races in America. Thus, everyone has the
responsibility to fight against these unjust laws, not only for the right of themselves but for the entire human beings.
The most knotty problems in the complex issue under discussion should be that how can we determine whether a law is unjust or not
and what kind of approach should we choose to resist the law that is unfair to us? Different people have different education
background, values, and beliefs, which provide with them a different sense of justice. Thus, before we initiate a movement to
contradict an unjust law, deliberate thinking and negotiation with people in different social status are necessary. And when it comes
to the best method we should resort to, as Martin learn form Gandhi, the nonviolent resistance is the most potent weapon available
to oppressed people in their struggle for fairness.
In sum, for the public safety and nation’s security, we have to obey laws that are just; for the right of human being and the progress
of civilization, we should resist laws that are unjust. After all, laws are made by human and serve for human.
