17. "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
As we all know, whether a law is just or unjust depends on individual's point of view. Different people, at different time, will take a different viewpoint to even a same law. If unjust laws should be disobeyed and resisted, then, which standards should an individual to taken to judge the laws first? So, it is a responsibility for a person to obey every law, and I don't think it is right for people in a society to disobey any laws. The society would be turned into a great confusion if every individual in it obey some laws, while disobey and resist other laws only according to their own standards.
First of all, a society has the possibility to be steady only under the basis of certain regulations, which include the legislation. As soon as a law is put into force, every individual should obey it to ensure the order of a society. Admittedly, an individual will probably sometimes confront with the situation that is unfair, but illicit, to him. For example, a friend of mine once was hurt by his cooperator who has used the loophole in the contract they have signed under some laws, and my friend could not get any damages in legal ways. If he took the laws, which can not make up his losses, as unjust, and then disobey or resist them, or even take some violence to get him recuperated, the result would be worse than that only one person has been hurt.
However, some laws does change into outdated, even seem to be "unjust", with the development of one society. Thomas Jefferson, the former president of the United States, once has said that no society can make a perpetual constitution, or even a perpetual law. These words indicate that we do need to conduct some reformation to the laws which suit contemporary society no longer. If the majority of a society thinks a law is unjust, why should we prefer to obey it rather than change or abolish it? Of course, any mature society should have a certain process, before which individuals should not disobey or resist any laws, to put a reformation or abolishment to a law.
Those who have been civilized and educated should have responsibilities to obey every law in their society; meanwhile, they should contribute their knowledge, experience and passion to make societies fairer. Immanuel Kant has written in his "Critique of Practical Reason" (and I translate it): that two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the more often and steadily we reflect upon them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me. Everyone should hold their conscience and moral bottom line, which can be represented by the laws as a whole.
In sum, the judgment of whether a law is just or unjust is a complicated issue. One should obey any law has put into force in one's society, or county, while, engage in reformation of those outdated laws in rightful ways. Under this basis, a society can develop steadily and become thriving and prosperous.
