Humans have been inventing tools and machines in order to attain their goals as painlessly as they can since the dawn of life. So far there are varieties of benefits gained from machines which do extend our physical and mental abilities in nearly every aspects of human lives. Although some machines seem more powerful than human mind -- computer for example, which is much faster when performing calculations, I believe, still higher is the mind-soul, by which we create machines and bear consciousness.

It is true that humans are allowing machines to take over their work, both physical and mental, to a greater extent than ever before since the machines can outshine humans under some circumstances. It is a remarkable achievement for IBM’s Deep Blue computer to defeat the world chess champion. Another case in point is the medical diagnosis system such as the ultrasound scanner without which the doctors cannot find out the exactly pathological locations. Therefore, some machines can do much better than humans in terms of computing as well as other technical process.

However, our mind has more tasks to perform than any machines. Human brain has to take charge of such actions as breathing, blinking, and coordination of all the body parts in order to maintain the human body’s functions for the entire lifetime. If a normal computer were employed to fulfill the same tasks as the human brain does and calculate data at the same time, it would be overloaded and react much more slowly than the human brain. In short, while machines are used in a relatively narrow field for some specific objectives, the human mind is for general purposes.  

Furthermore, human intelligence, is also concerned with emotions, creativity and other sorts of awareness. Whereas certain physical process can be imitated, machines cannot by itself bring about any awareness. Without human’s creativity, without organizing multitudes of spare parts, without the programs made by human, computers are nothing more than a bulk of metal not even able to perform a simple calculation, let alone to run a complex game. This is also true of artificial intelligence whose ultimate goal is to build a person, or more humbly, an animal.

In sum, I strongly agree with the speaker’s threshold claim that machines are always be inferior to the human mind and are only tools of human minds. It is the human’s intelligence that sets our species apart from all others living in the same planet.
