A140The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

In the above argument, author argues that because of Professor Thomas great teaching and research abilities, she is worthy to get a raise in salary and a promotion in order to prevent her from moving to another college. However, after further considerate about the argument, I am afraid that there are some flaws in critical respects so as the report can’t stand.

First, author says that Professor Thomas is so popular among students that her class is the largest at the university. But, in truth, we fail to find that there is any direct relationship between the scale of the classes and teacher’s popularity. It is possible that many students choose her class only as the course is only easy to pass. Or Professor Thomas has largest class just because of school’s assignment. But reporter didn’t show us really reason of the largest class. If above assumption can stand, which means that reporter’s indication about popularity is absolutely wrong.

Additionally, reporter points out that the money Professor Thomas brought to the university has exceeded her salary in each of the last two classes to prove her research ability. But this is inanition without contradiction. We still need to know the exact amount of exceeding money and situation of other professors. If most of professors can do better than her, her research ability is doubtful. And author mentions that the money she brought exceeding her salary in just last two years while she has worked for 17 years. What about the first 15 years? We know nothing about it. If Professor Thomas brought money much less than her salary for 15 years, there is no reason to rise her salary just because she do a little better in recent 2 years.

Finally, even if the assumption about her teaching and research abilities can stand, it doesn’t mean that it is necessary to give her a rise in salary and a promotion. Reporter doesn’t tell us why she would leave university to move to another if we don’t follow the recommendation. Can other universities offer her a salary more than sixty thousand dollars annually? If not, there is no need to fear about that she will leave school. It is also possible that Professor Thomas can get much higher in others, if so, we need to think about to rise not only ten thousand dollars per year. However, reporter provides no information about that, we have no idea that the decision about a rise and a promotion is suitable or not.

In sum, it is still possible that Professor Thomas did a good job and is worthy to get a rise in salary and a promotion to be kept in this university. But as a number of doubtful points still exist, reporter still need to provide further detail and evidence in proving her research and teaching ability before ultimate decision made.
