140. The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.

"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

The committee recommends in the report that in order to prevent Professor Thomas leaving ElmCityUniversity for anther one, they should raise her annual salary and promote her to Department Chairperson. To support this recommendation, the committee cites that Professor Thomas is popular among students and has brought research grants, which has exceeded her salary, to the university during the past two years. However, the recommendation relies on a series of unwarranted assumptions, which render it unconvincing as it stands.

First of all, this recommendation relies on the assumption that without the increase of salary and promotion to Department Chairperson, Professor Thomas will prefer to leave ElmCityUniversity. If she is satisfied with her current situation and never thinks about leaving the university for another college, there is no necessity for the committee to give her such a raise and promotion. For the promotion means more tired work, it is entirely possible to dissatisfy Professor Thomas by doing things according to the recommendation.

Secondly, even if Professor Thomas prefers to leave than stay without such a raise and promotion, the committee fails to support that she deserve these for the discussion below: First, Perhaps her classes are required courses, and perhaps students prefer the subjects than considering the teacher. For these matters, that her classes are among the largest at the university has nothing to do with her popularity and teaching abilities. Second, gaining more research grants in the past does not necessarily mean that she will bring more and more research grants to the university in the future. For university is not a profit-purchase company, research grants is not the only standard, even not the vital standard, to judge the research abilities. Third, even if Professor Thomas is good at researching, no evidence justify that she will also be good at management. Therefore, it is unconvincing to promote her to Department Chairperson.

Furthermore, even if she deserves the raise and promotion, no evidence justifies the increase of salary and promoting her to Chairperson enough to keep Professor Thomas staying. It is entirely possible that the academic environment do not meet the needs of Professor Thomas any more. Without considering this alternative explanation, the committee still makes the hasty recommendation.

In conclusion, the recommendation is unsubstantiated. To bolster it the committee should provide clear evidence that Professor Thomas tends to leave ElmCityUniversity, and that the real reason is related to the salary and position. Finally, to better evaluate the recommendation, I would need more information about the ability of Professor Thomas.

这篇A还真没什么毛病可挑的,错误找的准,文章自身的逻辑也很顺。
