Argument242 :The fellowing appeared as an editoral in the student newspaper of Groveton College.
  To combat the recently reported dramatic risen in cheating among college and university students,these instiution should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's,which calls for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated.Groveton's honor code replaced an old-fashioned system in which students were closely monitored by teachers and an average of thirty cases of cheating per year were reported.The honor code has  proven far more successful:in the first year it was in place,students reported twenty-one cases of cheating;five years later,this figure had dropped to fourteen.Moreover,in a recent survey conducted by Groventon honor council,a majority of students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without.
   

At the frist glance,this report seems to be somewhat convicing,but the further reflection tells me that I can not agree with the author's opinoin.The author reports that college and university should adopt honor code which calls for students to observes the corresponding discipline to prevent students'cheating behavior,this honor code replacing an old-fashioned system has proven successful:the number of students cheating on the examination decreases to fourteen in these years and a majority of students has admited the importance of this measure.Although author gave some data and evidences to support his assertion, other spcific information and more evidences should be provided to make his report forceful and persude the public.
First of all,the argument rests on the suggestion that other college and university should adpot honor codes similar to Groveton's.Admittedly,the suggestin is weak because it is extrmely possible that there are many dissimilarities between Groventon College and others.Maybe the students in other college and university are always honest and not cheating in the exam.It is also likely that the honor codes is inapplicable to these opening school that give full trust to its students.Before adopting honor codes in other colleges and universities,the author should compare them carefully and consider possible conditions which would happened to make th conclusion forceful.
Secondly,the fact that the honor codes calls for the students not to cheat and report the suspected cheating students is not reasonable.It is understanding that school authority stipulates students not to cheating in the examination because the students should answer honestly but it is reluctant for the students to report studnets who are suspected cheating.Maybe this student is only suspected and not certain. This student did not cheat in the examination but repoeted by other student,which would produce not good effects on the student's soul and mind.So the honor code itself has unseasonable stipulation and this measure should be amended to peruade the students and public.
Moreover, author asserts  the honor code has proven successful because of the decreasing numbers cheating in the exam gradually is suspicious and should be considered carefully.There may be other factors not only the honor code that author lists in the repoet.For instance,students realize the disadvantages cheating in the examination would bring such as dishonesty,conscience condemnation and so forth.Maybe test questions become simple that the students could solove these questions easily.Maybe the students try their best to work hard after realizing the importance of studying,so they could solove the test questons correctly and not need to cheat in the examination.While in this report,the author just contributes decreased cheating number to the hornor code.On other hand,the author does not povide the number of students cheating in the examination in five years mot mentioned in the report.Maybe during five years,the cheating number is more than ever. So admittedly the conclusion is fallacious reason unless other possible causal explanations have been rule out.Therefore,author should provide more spcific information and evidences to support the argument.
Finally,the fact that a majorty of students would not be likely to cheat in the exam lends no support to the argument.Samples for the survey should be statistically reliable.Unfortunately,in face of such uncertain evidence-only"a majorty of students"not lists the certain number,it is fallacious to say that these students are representative to reflect the overall.The auther should provide more spcific details such as the number in this survey,the produrce of survey and so on to support the argument.Only so the readers are persude to believe the final conclusions.
To sum up,this argument has not comviced me that the number of students cheating in the exam decreased is due to the operation of this honor code.In this case,the author should provide more information like the specific produrce of the survey,other factors decreasing the number and so on to make this report forceful and plausible.
