issue 147
Whether tradition and modernization are incompatible is a controversial topic. While the speaker asserts so, in my view, I agree with the speaker insofar that in some cases, modernization indeed objects tradition. However, in many cases, tradition and modernization are not mutually exclusive even embrace each other.
First of all, the major reason for that tradition and modernization are not mutually exclusive is that experience from tradition directs the activities of modern society and brings positive effects to modern society. For supporting example, one needs see the modern economy. Although modern economy has distinctive difference from tradition economy including the types of merchandise used to exchange, the rules for exchanging, the ways of exchanging, some tradition economy theories still conduct modern economy activities. “the art of war” ,a book which was written by a famous militarist Wu Sun, aptly illustrates this point. Many business leaders all gain important inspiration from this book about how to manage a group and how to compete with their opponents in market. The founder of panasonic once said (now I paraphrase ) :" panasonic can develop from a small factory to a worldwide famous company greatly contributes to the book -the arts of war. Besides, all kind of aspects in modern society such as politics, arts, technology all gain valuable instruction from ancient social theory.
In addition, many modernization things originate from tradition and improve tradition greatly, such as language, culture, technology. They are all built on the basis of tradition. Without tradition, they can not appear. For instance, language was handed down from one generation to generation. Although along with the development of society, some new words were introduced to language, a majority of words and usage about come from ancient language. Culture is the same case as language. Some traditional virtues such as "Honesty, kindness" still are popular in modern society. Besides, modern technology also derived from ancient scientific knowledge. Take computer for example, the invention of computer is the result of the combination of traditional physical and mathematical knowledge. In a certain sense, we can say that without ancient physics and mathematic, the computer can not be devised. In short, it is hard to separate modernization from tradition.
However, we should aware that ,in some case, it indeed exists that modernization contradicts tradition. It is true when it comes to some political system and social conception. For instance, in modern society, it is widely public accepted that women and man should have equal rights. But, in ancient society, it is not this case, and women usually were discriminated. For the same job, women were paid littler money than man. Moreover, centralization government is available in ancient society. However, today, many countries all over the world oppose centralization and advocate democracy.
In sum, from what have been discussed, we can safely make the conclusion that, for most cases, tradition and modernization are not incompatible, since tradition is the root of modernization, and make guidance for the development of modernization. For few cases, modernization contradicts tradition and we muse choose one. |
