TOPIC: ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.

"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

The Committee member who reports such recommendation should lose his job for his logical confusions in this report which render the conclusion unconvincing. I will discuss these flaws one by one.

To begin with, the great scale of Professor Thomas's class cannot equal to the great popularity among students. There are many reasons that may lead to the result. Possibly, this result is because that his class are required by University that all the students must choose, while professors in botany are not many in Elm City University. In that case, unless the situations about the students in her class have been given, such as whether the students enjoy her class or just become the clock watchers, and what they really learn after finishing the course, we cannot simply conclude that Professor Thomas is actually popular.

Furthermore, the sum of money she brought to the university may seem large compared with her own salary; however, it does not mean that her contribution to the funds of the university is really considerable. It is entirely possible that other professors of botany earn much more funds than Professor Thomas does. It is also possible that the money she earns is actually wasted in her own project due to her lacks of the research ability. Regardless of these factors, the author cannot credit too much upon Professor Thomas.

Even if that Professor Thomas did a good job in her seventeen years career, the recommendation that the university should raise the salary and promotion in order to prevent her from going to other colleges. A $10,000 rise in salary may seems way too less compared with the salary provided by other colleges who are interested in Professor Thomas, if Professor Thomas is really as excellent as the author asserts above. What is more, Professor can make herself successful in her present status does not prove that she will also succeed in the position of Department Chairperson. While the status rises, the contents of the jobs change as a result. Chairperson may have to pay more attention and energy on the human relationship and the management of the whole department, which may be the disadvantages of Professor Thomas, not only focus on the teaching and research task, which may be the just advantages of Professor Chairperson on the contrary. Lacking indispensable cautious consideration of those possibilities, the irrational acceptance may not only fail to keep Professor Thomas in Elm City University, but cause serious disorders in both teaching areas and management areas in the department.

In summary, the committee should consider the situation again before any conclusion is drawn.

LZ的首末两段的写法貌似至今还有争议,偶还是觉得有点冒险
