Issue144 【loveaw】第九次作业 TOPIC: "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

I fundamentally agree with the speaker's claim that it is the artist, rather than the critic, who gives society something of lasting value. In my view, however, both artists and critics are indispensable and helpful in that both of them bring something of eternal value to society in different ways.
On the one hand, it is the artist who creates the works and masterpieces which contain lasting value for society. First, appreciating those works and masterpieces gives people an aesthetic perception and pleasure, which can be enjoyed by a wealth of audiences in different periods of time. Consider, for instance, the Mona Lisa, the most famous painting of Leonardo da Vinci, which brings a profound and everlasting anesthetic value to society, especially the enigmatic smile, which leaves an eternal mystery for audiences.. Secondly, artists create those meaningful works which can inspire and encourage people. Beethoven, the greatest composer of his day, composed a myriad of outstanding and wonderful compositions including nine well-know symphonies. Symphony No.9,which was composed when he was thoroughly deaf, inspires a large number of people at different time to insist on [adhere to] their ideals and never give up. Besides, through those works artists are able to uncover and reflect the reality in society, and in the mean time they will illuminate audiences to think about the real life as well as social problems. For example, "The Human Comedy", which was written by Balzac, one of the greatest and most eminent French realistic novelist, portrays the panorama of French society in the nineteenth century, and motivates people to consider various society issues and phenomena at that time.
On the other hand, in addition to artists, there are times when critics play an indispensable role in discovering and illustrating the beauty of works of art which contain lasting value. First of all, it is critics who are more familiar with aesthetic value of works of art than the masses and thus can distinguish some outstanding works of true value from a variety of works of art. Consider, for example, Van Gogh, an eminent postimpressionist painter, whose paintings were not popular with those people at all when he was alive. It is said that he sold only one painting before he deceased. However, nowadays, after critics valued and exalted his works, especially such as his Sunflower paintings, they are far more valuable and well-known than a wealth of other paintings. Moreover, criticisms can promote the improvement of art to a great extent in that critics can comment on those works and point out the defects in them for artists which will exert a positive effect on the improvement of art.
While in these cases critics can help to promote the development and popularity of art, they are unable to bring more benefits and value to society, and even on many occasions they will have a negative influence on people’s appreciation of works of art. In the first place, critics simply can comment on the works of art which artists have created while they, in fact, are unlikely to create valuable works of art on their own, let alone to give society something of lasting value. What if all of artists did not create works of art any more? In this case, they would be unable to make any comment on new works of art but on those past works of art, which may be a mere commonplace without any new value. What is more, it is too much various commentaries that distract our attention from other works of art of true lasting value and waste a great deal of time of people, because there are a great many critics of diverse genres, who lay emphasis on different styles and techniques of art. For instance, very often a variety of critics comment on the same movie, however, the commentaries are usually far different from one another. Some of them censure the movie while the other ones extol it in many respects, which renders it difficult to make a determination on the movie.
In sum, not merely artists bring something of lasting value to society by creating a variety of works of art of perpetual aesthetic value but critics also help to discover, illustrate and promote the popularity as well as the improvement of art, which give society of something of eternal value to some degree. However, I fundamentally agree with the assertion that it is the artist, rather than the critic, who produces society something of everlasting value on the ground that just artists create the works of art of true lasting value for society.
