At 3:17 pm, Thursday, April 19,  near South Kenwood Avenue between 53rd & 54th Streets (within Nichols Park), a man was walking when he noticed a group of about 20 male juveniles (about 13-15 years of age) within the park.  This group then surrounded him and someone struck the victim on the back of the head.  One of the group then demanded that the victim empty his pockets.  When the victim ignored this and tried to keep walking, he was struck, knocked down, and kicked.  A small radio was taken from his pocket.  The group fled when the victim went to a nearby emergency phone and summoned University police who were unsuccessful in locating the offenders.  The victim refused medical attention.  Police are investigating.

Police report that between February 22 and May 2, there have been eight incidents occurring between 2:30 p.m. and 3:25 p.m. in which members of groups of two to about twenty male juveniles or young men assaulted male victims, usually walking alone.  Six of these incidents occurred in the area between Ellis to Kenwood Avenues and 53rd to 55th Streets. In all these incidents, the offenders have struck the victims with their fists and, at times, also kicked them.  In two of these incidents, valuables were taken. Police continue to investigate these crimes and suggest that individuals walking alone in the community be especially aware of groups of male juveniles or young men.  It is advisable to avoid using cell phones and CD players while you are walking because the use of such devices can make you less aware of what is occurring around you.  If you see any activity that makes you uneasy, use the emergency phones located throughout the community or seek a phone and call 911 or University Police at 702-8181.

There were four similar incidents on Monday, May 21, occurring at 2:05 p.m. on East 59th Street between Ellis and University Avenues, at 7:10 p.m. on South Kimbark Avenue between Hyde Park Blvd. and 52nd Street, at 7:25 p.m. on South Ridgewood Court near 54th Street, and at 9:15 p.m. on the East Bound Midmay near Ellis Avenue.

Men walking alone (and in one case two men together) were confronted by groups of generally male juveniles (in one case a female juvenile was also involved) and punched in the head (and in one case to the chest as well).  The victims were not seriously injured.  The offenders fled in each case.

Police strongly advise pedestrians to cross to the other side of the street and consider changing direction if they see a group of juveniles coming in their direction.  Do not attempt to walk through these groups.  Use the emergency phones located throughout the community if you see anything that causes you concern.  Consider purchasing a whistle from the University Police Department at 56th and Ellis Avenue and use it immediately if you are approached by such a group.

University police have increased both vehicular and bicycle patrol to address this series of batteries (and in a few cases robberies were involved as well) which began on February 22 and now encompass fourteen such incidents.
