For Argument

• To get a job you need a professional qualification, not an academic one.
• PhD is not a timely qualification - professional qualifications are up-to-date.
• PhDs who spend 20 years in education are disturbed people who are "of no earthly good". They should be in Barlinnie Prison".
• "PhDs are damaged individuals".
• We can analyse a situation to no end but there is no action in PhDs, i.e. nothing gets done from them.
• People can "specialise so much they have forgotten the big picture" - like PhDs.
• The generalist is important in the real world, not the specialist (and PhDs are specialists).
• How many CEOs have PhDs?
• The major decisions in life are not research based, so PhDs are not useful.
• The world is getting worse and that's what progress is giving us, therefore research is creating a worse environment. PhDs are of no earthly good.

Against Argument

• PhD is mainly a training exercise where the researcher gets experience in conducting research.
• People have different objectives and a PhD can be one of them.
• PhD is not considered the end but the beginning. It provides you with skills that you will be able to apply.
• PhD is beneficial as it gives you the wider picture.
• There are a lot of people in industry that conduct research.
• PhD pushes the researcher towards allowing your thoughts to change and thus be able to adapt to different environments easily.
• Action without theory to support it is not useful.
• In a PhD environment you gain more training and skills than in the real world where you are directed.
• Most of the PhD's conducted are relevant to the real world (e.g. chemistry...)
• Present researchers are the educators for the next generation. Thus they have to keep in line with all the new innovations.
• PhD allows the researcher to develop a particular expertise that cannot be learnt from industry.
• A lot of people conducting research want a job in Academia thus it is crucial.
