TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

正文:
In retrospect of long history of human beings, what we see is a miscellaneous and blurred panorama high-lightened and punctuated by great events and extraordinary figures. The emphasis on the famous few, however, does not deny the contributions of the mass people, but serves as pivotal nodes in an entangled network of social coincidences, connects and illuminates the backgrounds, correlations, and aftermath of the otherwise interspersed and disorganized details as an organic whole body.
It is impartial and inappropriate to claim the significance of the mass people has been undervalued. History is well aware of that without the foundation constructed by all our ancestors and the interaction and collaboration coming from all our contemporaries, the accomplishments of most individuals would be nothing more than mirages. Among numerous illustrations of this truth, the discovey of double-helix structure of DNA will furnish a cogent example, the ingenuity of Watson and Crick is indeed impressing, but equally outstanding are the clear-cut x-ray diffraction image provided by Franklin and Wilkins, the discovery of almost-always-equal proportions of purine and pyrimidine in any organic bodies by Chargaff, and all those prior works, both experiments and hypotheses contributed by those countless scientific researchers.( Another example is the emancipation of slaves in American. Abraham Lincoln, undoubtedly is the key figure of this revolution, thus deserves special regard and respect. But there are also myriad memorandums, either documentary like Root or fictional such as Uncle Tom's Cabin, record and recount the struggles of ordinary people during that era. )Moreover, there are some events in history attributed and scripted totally to the contributions of the people, represented by the fall of Bastille, the Boston Tea Party. The study of history does places sufficient to the significance of mass people.
But this is not to say the "key figure" plays inferior roles compared to the group, nor is to allege the great individuals only serve as an agent to the realization of the inevitable torrent of social impulses. They, to some extent, are created by the contingencies, but more importantly, it is the characteristic excelling dispositions that attributed to their unusual deeds, and in return, affect and changes the pace and direction of our society. In the realm of sciences, figures like Gregor Mendel, Albert Einstein, and Dr. Perelman all serves as solid example of individuals outside the mainstream of scientific research who independently made revolutionary innovations, cracked the problems or even save the science itself from crisis. When it comes to sociopolitical field, this point becomes no less authentic. Adolf Hitler, the notorious war criminal and frantic racialist, depending on his demagoguery and captivating charisma, instigated the massacre of Jews and brought out WW2; Franklin. D. Roosevelt, on the contrary, a same innate leader, but with good will and ardent devotion the welfare of Americans, successfully brought his people from the loom of Great Depression. In this respect, the famous few, depending on their extraordinary gifts and capabilities, play an and irreplaceable part in the progress of history.
What is more, sometimes it is not only necessary, but also desirable to study an epoch of history through the key figure of that time. For the collection of information and data of all the participants of that event is both tedious and unfeasible, and meanwhile meaningless. And only by concentrating on the research of the pivotal figure, and by further groping through the relevant people and events can we grasp the skeleton and essence of the issue more easily and accurately. Furthermore, by criticizing, emulating or reflecting on the representative immortal figures, we can learn more for reference of our personal benefits than from an undistinguished group.
To sum up, the “famous few” deserves accentuation while the mass people should equally be given proper emphasis. The history would never become history without the co-contributions of the key figure and the mass people. And the former, attibuted to their outstanding qualities, plays a crucial role in organizing and clarifying the loose structure of history and is helpful in understanding past, present and future. |
