TOPIC: ARGUMENT171 - The following appeared in a memo from the marketing director of Bargain Brand Cereals.
"One year ago we introduced our first product, 'Bargain Brand' breakfast cereal. Our very low prices quickly drew many customers away from the top-selling cereal companies. Although the companies producing the top brands have since tried to compete with us by lowering their prices, and although several plan to introduce their own budget brands, not once have we needed to raise our prices to continue making a profit. Given our success selling cereal, Bargain Brand should now expand its business and begin marketing other low-priced food products as quickly as possible."


The arguer intends to use the evidence that one year ago Bargain Brand(BB)breakfast cereal succeed in sale to convince us that low price can drew a large quantities of customers away from other companies. It takes an assumption as a starting point that like BB breakfast cereal, if we expand the business, the new products will also succeed in the low-priced food market. The evidence is appropriated here to conclude that given our selling success on cereal market, BB should begin marketing other low-priced food. However, a close study of other facets of this argument will produce important findings that it suffer from several logical flaws.

First, the low-price of BB breakfast cereal is considered as the determinative reason which leading to the fact that BB breakfast cereal draw a great deal of customers away from the other top-selling cereal companies while the former may just be a negligible factor leading to the latter. For example, BB breakfast cereal is not only of high quality but also healthy food which is invented by some nationwide famous food experts. Maybe it is much more delicious than some other top-selling companies' products. Thus, more information should be provided by the author to demonstrate that low-price is the main factor result in BB breakfast cereal’s drawing more customers away.

Second, even if the low-price gives rise to the success, the arguer propose misleading us to believe that one year ago the BB low-price breakfast cereal succeed in sales, similarly, one year later, it is now that the low-price food will also win the market. Nonetheless, common sense informs us that every thing will not stay the same on any different conditions, any different palaces, and any different times. Perhaps one year ago the income of the local citizens is lower than that of today, at that time, in order to save the budget, the low-price cereal is popular, but now it is totally different from yesterday any more. Perhaps the customs, one year ago, were fond of low-price food in that they are told by the overwhelming advertisement that actually there do exists some cereal which is not only of low price and high quality but now the citizens will more concern about the quality, the taste, and the convenience.

Third, the conclusion of this argument is in fact based on the assumption that as low-priced BB breakfast cereal is, the new low-price product which is invent by BB will also bring more profits and surely succeed in sails. But actually can we make sure that the customer of BB breakfast cereal would still be the fans of the new food just for its low-price? It is likely that the citizens now are more concerned about the quality of the food rather than the price which is the major factor of choosing foods one year ago. Consequently it will be more strengthened if more evidence is supplied to demonstrate that like BB breakfast cereal's success, the new products invented by BB will win the low-price food market by its low-price and.

In sum, the argument is unconvincing by the details given by the arguer. It is unnecessary for us to accept the conclusion that BB should now expand new business and begin to market other low-priced food products as quickly as possible.
