I strong agree the speakers’ claim that teachers working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach is beneficial to students they teach. However, a threshold qualification should be added to this claim, which is how to seek the balance between working outside the academic world and teaching and researching in their professions. With limited energy, if the professors spend most of his time working outside, it is impossible for them to give much attention to the teaching and academic research, which will impede the improvement of the quality of instruction at the college and university. In fact, such problem is real appeared in the complex modern world especially regarding to the work have a profitable income which is much more than they can earn in the college or have something do with rising the professors' reputation and position in their areas of specialty. In the field economics, for example, it is quite common to see that the professors plunge themselves into stock market or making a business project for corporations, which result in lacking time to do the college work.
Aside from the qualification working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach will definitely do well to the improvement of the quality of instruction at the college and university level. There are two benefits of doing so. Firstly, the faculty working outside will get much personal experience about the professions outside the academia, which can be applied into the daily teaching. As a university student, the practical experience and real-world examples always sparks our great interests. Consequently, the class is full of a contagious excitement, which will inspire us to seek more knowledge or even to pursue the field as the career.
Secondly, faculty who work outside will have the knowledge about the recent development of the application of the field, which is crucial to students' making the decision whether to choose the field as the career. The professors with field experience will bring up-to-data information about the widely used technology in the field, the current job market or the development aspect of the market of the field, while it is difficult for college job-directing department to give these details. Further more, a large project always needs not only the experts in only one field, but also experts in other profession. And such projects will also call for cooperation of all the experts, which will let them know the application of their profession in other fields. Such knowledge will be informed the students and in result will give them more choice about future career. For instance, more and more students major in mathematics come to the economics field which is, to some extent, due to the intercommunication of two fields in the working outside the academia.
In the final analysis, basing on the balance between the field work and college work, both students will surely benefit from faculty's field work and the college and university should promote this.
