With the current rapid development of the culture, it has been more and more difficult to get a deep comprehension of a society's ideas and values though an overall careful analyzing of the history of the culture. Consequently, people tend to judge these from observing the appearance and behaviors of the society's people basing on the common sense that people' attitudes and interests determine the way they look, dress and act. However, because of the complexity and diversity of society, in some cases, this common sense may not be effective as people expect.

To a large extent, how people dress, in what way they act are impacted by their personal attitude and interests. In fact, performing and behaviors is a very common way for people to express their ideas and preference. For instance, young people often show preference to the fashionable clothes which contain some factors like lighting and different colors, outstanding designing. Chasing fashion seems to their entrance key to the contemporary social team, which represent their desire to express their characters. By contrast, old people don't have the same preference and prefer to wear clothing that is more traditional, which show their treasuring of past memory and seeking for peaceful lives.

           In some cases, appearance and behaviors of people really provide an accurate signal about the values and ideas. The society itself is constituted by individuals and the relationship between them and social trend and preference is the representation of individual common values. For instance, in the middle-east countries, the black clothing of women cover them so completely that we can only see their eyes and in social custom it is not allowed from them to appear in the public place such as the football yard and political meeting even appearing on the TV is forbidden. This is a reflection of the discrimination of women in these countries. In the European countries, it is common to see variety of different clothes on the road and any public places is opened for everyone, which show the liberty and democracy concept of the society.

           However, in some respects we will not get accurate and complete understanding of a social culture just by interviewing the appearance and behaviors of its people. There are two facts supporting this judgment. Firstly, people will take on different clothes according to different conditions and surroundings. For example, it is very common for people to dress well on a ball or on a banquet. So we should not make the judgment that value of the society is chasing flamboyance and enjoyment. Secondly, if we just judge a person by his performance, sometimes we will lose the fact. A well-dressing and acting with manners gentlemen can be a successful person in a field and also can be a ferocious and relentless planter controlling hundreds of slaves. Unfortunately, our tending to coherent good performance and good nature leads to losing of the real fact.

           In sum, when we just need a superficial understanding of a society' values, judging from people's behavior and appearance may be the most convenient and effective way. And when we need a further and overall comprehension, much more should be done.
